just something thats has bothered me lately. does everyone think its okay to ask someone how much their paint or how much money do you have into your car? just been getting that question allot and personally it just bugs me a little. i just don't care to get into how much money has been spent. kinda like asking, " so how much money do you make" i usally just say i dont add it up. or it cost a few dollars or something else like that. but is it just me?

It really wouldn't bother me if I had the paint job and work you have done to your car. I have seen it personally and I think it's remarkably clean. I just think people are just trying to get a feel of what it would cost to get some of that quality work done to that car. Personally, I like when people ask me about my mods, the cost, etc. It gives me an opportunity to make new friends on the show circuit.

I think its ok to a certain degree. but then like you said sndsgood kinda feels like they are trying to get to know you alittle to well for comfort. plus to me it makes me feel like your giving them an invitation to break into your car. but thats just me. I'll talk about cost to close friends or people I know but any random person I wouldnt just for safety.

Someone asking me what i make and someone asking me how much something costs are two different things to me, i can see why it might bother you but i have no problem with it and i really dont see it as a big deal. People are just curious. Take it as a compliment, they like what you have and want to know if they can afford something like that

I never really tell them how much money exactly is in the car, but will answer any questions about the mods or how they were done etc. I too think its kind of annoying, :oh how much did THAT cost?" that gets old and annoying all too fast at shows, so when someone asks those q's I just say "it's a secret "

Usually i just go with "I dont keep track, because if i did i probably wouldnt modify it this much" I too feel that it is an awkward question and even a little rude. If i did know and tell i'm sure the conversation would go downhill in a hurry anyway.

Jason, how much money do you make?

j/k. It bothers me too. Although nobody asks me that question anymore since my cobalt is mostly stock. I do, however, frequently get asked how much the Cobalt cost from the dealer, which doesnt really bother me much.

ehh, if i saw the car at a show and was having an actual convo with you, i'd probably end up asking how much the paint job costed? just cuz its not one you see everyday.

I don't think there's anything wrong with giving ballpark figures. I don't see this as anything at all like asking how much someone makes.

I think that if someone is at a car show, and thinking about building up their own ride like the ones they're seeing, then it's probably best that they find out up front just how much stuff costs.

Back in the day you could drop a couple grand on mods and show up with something that would turn heads. These days, you've gotta spend a fortune just to get any attention at all. People should know this before getting started, and those who've already done it shouldn't be shy about spreading the news.

Whenever someone asks me how much I've put into the car or how much something costs, I always say that I try not to remember so that its less painful. They usually laugh and it breaks the ice with them to see what they're really about. They'll usually then say what they drive and what they want to do to their car and then it goes from there.

i think the question "how much do you have in your car" or similar ones are innocent enough. there is a good chance that the person wants to know how much an amazing paint job like yours cost, and if you were to give him a price, theres a chance he would ask "where did you get it done" next. maybe hes trying to price paint jobs and/or body work via proxy instead of going to 50 different shops and trying to explain the type of work he wants and getting 50 different quotes. if that makes sense....

the only way i could see it being rude is if you were to answer with an estimate or actual price, only to be scoffed at "you put $xx.xx into a sunfire!" but beyond that, take it as a compliment.

I hate the how much money question too. I don't show the car, but do get the question often w/ mine. It's just one of those, I've been working on it for a long time and have forgotten about a lot of the little things that I've spent money on.

BTW: Jason the car is magnificant in person. Pictures don't do it justice and did you really mean it? I can have the valve cover on there when you get your new one done?

Well to be honest I've yet to dump a ton of money into a J I can't get it back out, but next year I do plan on doing a nice amount. I just hope that Brandon will have the time to paint the car, and not kill my pocket. You so get what you pay for.

Just tell them you painted it in your garage with brushes and a roller.

yeah its just one of those things where its more people who arn't nessicarily into modding cars, more just the people who are there just looking around. and its just one of those things that im not a big showoff and dont want to say i spent x amount just on paint and have them thinking im rich and can throw all this money around type of thing. and to be honest i have no idea what ive spent on the car. ive never bothered adding it up. im sure its a @!#$load, but i never went into this thinking of it as an investment or anything like that, its basically just money spent for an enjoyable time. i enjoy working on the car, i enjoy showing it off so as long as i have the money to spare it doesnt bother me dumping it into a sunfire. but i know allot of people dont ever see it that way.

skunk, yeah if i like the new one and you come out to help with the s/c then u can have it.

well, most of my questions surround the NAWS bottle and or 'what shot' i have, then i have to find time in helping people figure out what the car even is.

BUT, ive had a few people ask how much i have in it, i go 'why, you wanna steal it?" and they usually laugh and dont ask again.

I agree with you. I don't think asking about money to any degree is a fair question. I wouldn't answer it. That just doesn't seem right. I've never asked that. I just look at the car. Snap a picture, and maybe ask if he knows how fast it is the the 1/4 mile.

Re: car show etiqute
Tuesday, September 02, 2008 8:24 PM
i often get asked how fast it is and if i run it at the track as well...

i say, do you really think this thing would be this clean if i raced it on a regular basis? eh.. big no. i jokingly say this stuff though, i LOVE it when people ask questions, means their interested in your hard work and that right there is the pay off for me.

think one of the best was a women at a gas station asking me what kind of car it is and my reply was " the exact same car your driving" lol she was driving a sunfire.

That reminds me of when I had the 04. LSS kit, stock wheels just lowered, come out of the movie theater and had someone ask me what kind of car it was. Funny thing was...it still had the cavalier badge on the back.

I also got the where did you get it painted a lot w/ that car too. People thought it was a custom color when in fact I see more arrival blue than anything else.

People at shows are idiots I'm convinced of it. They just don't understand certain things. I used to get the "Why a Cavalier?" a lot. I asked them what they had/modded and turned the question on them. Most times it shuts them up.
