Dude, no offense, because I've met you and you seem like a cool guy, but you must be a salesman at PH. Why? Because fact is salesmen don't know jack about cars. There are a lot of reasons why a RWD conversion is an impossibility. For starters, the engine is transversely mounted, this means you can't use a RWD tranny. A transversely mounted engine could never be RWD, however there are a number that are AWD (Mitsu EVO, most Subarus, etc). Add to that the setup of the rear suspension of the Delta platform could never support RWD.
Now, the truth is, the car will have an available Limited Slip Differential, which in effect ties both front wheels together. The lack of an LSD in a car is evident when you floor it and only one wheel spins. An LSD locks the wheels together so you get equal power distribution. Most likely someone in the chain of ever-so-knowledgeable salespeople confused this with RWD.
At least now for sure I won't be going to PH to buy my next car. I don't even like going to their parts counter with all the salesmen staring me down. Why are they all hispanic?

and isnt the LSD gonna be in the performance package as well...which wont be available upon initial release of the cobalt as well...hence maybe the "june" date?
no guys, i talked to my gsm today to get the scoop and its going to be rwd i swear. ill take that bet and raise you 100$ on it i wouldnt lie, we had to go to this meeting in hollywood for a update on this and other things coming out, but i couldnt go cuz of the day it was on. so they are making a conversion to rwd and tomarrow ill find out what set up they'll use too and keep you posted and the guys who stare you down are mostly hispanic and are just trying to make sales also dave your right it would be imposible on the delta platform as it is now but thats why its going to come out in june takes some time to re-adjust the platfrom for this conversion i would think and also your right about sales guys not knowing anything about cars but to sell a car you have to know whats in it or you wont make a sale common sense right my gsm the person in charge wouldnt be saying this since hes in charge of the upcoming product lines also the ups at the dealership made most sales go to this meeting to become informed it wasnt required the offical news will come soon i dont know when but like i said tomarrow ill find out
So you wanna make it $100 or raise the $50 to $150. Your call, how much can you afford to lose?
while dave does have a point
the eco can be done in rear drive , look at the sky and soltice
is it practilce on the cobalt to go rear drive ?? HELL NO
rear drive cobalt isnt gonna happen man
DAVE you are incorrect.
A transversely mounted engine can be used in a RWD car. Did you forget about the MR2.
So what is the engines in the back.
As for the cobalt, It will never be sold from the factory as RWD.

the fireo also
id think they would awd it before they would rear drive
i'll raise you 100 cuz daddy needs a new pair of shoes.

Don't swear. Because it's not going to happen.
Hell, i'll drive down there and buy one myself FROM YOU if it is actually RWD. And I mean all Cobalt SS's, not just "a few".
It's not going to happen. Tell your GSM that he is full of @!#$.
No offense to you at all, it just doesn't make sense to me.
Uh shut the @!#$ up, mid and rear engine cars don't count in this equation. How many mid engine cars are produced today? 2?
And the Delta platform CAN NOT support RWD. It can not be modified to support RWD. Kappa and Sigma are currently the only ones out of the newer GM platforms that can support RWD.
Oh and now I see why salesmen are so stupid - they get it from management. Seriously, where does the idiocy stop? Why can't people who sell cars have any common sense? Back when I worked in sales, in order to sell something you had to know it inside and out. I've met some car salesmen that fit this picture - the guy I bought my cav from for example. But for every 1 I've met that knew the car, I have met no less then 100 that wouldn't have a clue if it fell on them out a 50 story window. Oh well, at least it provides endless amusement making fun of them to their face.

I may not be a car genious but I was thinking about the possibility of a RWD Cobalt...
If the package of 200 HP supercharged car and it was RWD, it would be the equivalent of a stock V6 Mustang (give or take a weight difference). I think that would be the dumbest move on GMs part and I personally, don't think GM is dumb on that part.
Second, I don't think any company has ever advertised a car on TV, magazines & shows and then all of a sudden changed the drivetrain. That simply makes no sence.
Like Dave said, Limited Slip, not RWD

I have to agree....Not because it can't be done, but just isn't practical at all. Why would they take an existing platform, and make drastic changes so that a small percentage of them will be rwd? From a dollar's point of view, it'd be insane. I'm not saying that someone can't make it donw, and won't. But for production, I don't think it'd happen. It'd be like Chevy making a few Vettes FWD just to satisfy a couple old people who wanna drive in the winter
Brakes? I don't need no stinking brakes....I have air bags
