Struts?

How do you know when to replace a strut?
I'm trying to pin-point a rattle in the right rear and so far I replaced the strut mount and it's still there.
My mechanic said I didn't nmeed that and that I'd be waisting my money and he's right, the rattle is still haunting!

Please tell me what you heard about "KYB" struts (I just got a right rear put on).
What would be better, "KYB" OR "Monroe"? and why?

Please help and let me know of ANY suggestions you may have to help me rid of this RATTLE!!!
Ahhhh!!!!! lol

Struts don't rattle. What kind of pitch is the "rattling". Have someone else describe it, what do they think it sounds like?

rattle means theres something loose. your strut isnt bad. if your strut was bad you would bottom out on every bump

Struts don't make you bottom out. Struts make you bounce. Of course, a big bounce can make you bottom out but that won't happen "on every bump". If you're bottoming out on every bump, then you've probably broken or collapsed a spring.

it's not bottoning out at all.
the rattle / crackle sounds kind of like when you tease the aluminum on an empty pop can to make noise.
it's a for sure that it's coming from the mount/ shouck/ strut, i just can't pin point it AND I JUST REPLACED THE STRUT MOUNT and the noise goes away when the temp get warmer.

throw a thin layer of packaging foam between where the strut mounts to the car and the strut mount,
see if that helps,

I have the very same thing except it is a louder rattle that goes away when warm. I too changed the strut mounts. My son the apprentice says I have a bad rear strut. Considering the front ones just died at 92K, I would tend to believe the rear factory ones are shot too. Since he can get me the struts at close to cost, i will replace next weekend if the temps go back up.

Sorry to say, I will not be able to help you on this Jan. I decided enough is enough with this car. 95K and already i have had to replace front struts, springs (one broke over xmas) and mounts, 2 front wheel bearings, rear mounts, now perhaps struts as well and the list goes on.
Car is being traded in on Wed. Good luck.

I have a similar problem on the front right suspension. Dont know whether its my Strut Mount or my Shocks. My ride makes a sweeky noise over every little crack or bump. So what i decided to do is purchase Koni shocks and strut mount, but still dont know which brand to go for. If anyone has an idea of what my problem might be, please help out. Thanks. Also, if you know of a good name brand Strut Mount, that would be very helpful as well. Thanks again.

it's the strut mounts. I just replaced my rear mounts, and they were sloppy. I could wiggle it with it still bolted on the strut, so needless to say they got replaced, along with the struts and shocks and top hats and springs all around. KYB Gr2's ride soooo nice!

I replaced both mounts and all was good for about a month, then the clunking came back with a vengance but it was different. It sounds like loose bolts. I have now checked twice and all is tight. Thursday morning can't come soon enough. Bye bye GM crap. NEVER again. And to head off flames over what I bought to replace, don't ask, I don't wish to cause a flame war.

wish you luck Shawn.

i own a 1999 S10 that's great and a 1989 Z24.
I thought good of GM to just buy this used 2001 Z24 but learning how crap it is!
Think I will do the same and sell this in the summer when it doesn't rattle.
