Brake pad exploded today...sooo big brake time
Monday, October 04, 2010 11:52 AM
I was driving to school today and went to stop when I heard a clunk and saw a bunch of smoke followed by hellish grinding when i moved. I putted to the parking lot and the car sits there for now. What a better time to do big brakes. I should be receiving a bonus at work soon so here is the plan....

For the fronts Suburu wrx STI 12.5 front rotors coupled with LS1 camaro calipers and a custom 3/8 steel bracket...believe it or not they are within .050 the same thickness of each other stock.

For the rears STI rotors coupled with 01 mustang brake calipers w/ integral parking brake and 3/8 brackets. Also conveniently same thickness as stock.

Any comments or concerns before I order my stuff. Do you think 3/8s will be thick enough?

I'll have progress pics once the bonus check rolls in.

I think bigfoot is blurry,
that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra
scary to me. There's a large, out-of-focus monster, roaming the countryside.

I like this oh yes I do. If the bracket is relatively simple it would be an excellent option to cheap big brakes that keep the stock bolt pattern as opposed to the NWF swap.

This is what im hoping for, I did not want to switch bolt patterns or widen my front end any more than its is with the NWF swap. Therefore i came up with this lol. I do have to admit I stole the STI rotor idea from Phil Lindsay but he chose to use wilwood calipers with his setup. I prefer parts like brake pads that I can buy at the local parts store. I will be getting my calipers from the Pick-n-Pull for a grand total of 52 dollars plus tax for all 4 corners.

Excellent. Im probably going to copy you. Atleast for the fronts.

Have you looked at the F-Body caliper to figure out how hard its going to be to get the rotor centered in the caliper? I mean as far as mounting the caliper. Thats my only concern as of now.

No that is something I have to tackle. OEM used to mod camaro brakes to fit our cars and the brackets looked surprisingly simple. I realize the offsets might be different but im confident that it should be pretty straight forward to make.

This is extremely interesting...I too have held off on the NWF swap for the reason of having to change bolt patterns.

I'd love to see how this goes, I can't stand how @!#$ty the brakes are on my car and I'd love a upgrade like this.

I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Since its a budget build Im going to buy the cheapest drilled and slotted rotors available and replace them later with better quality ones. This should put the cost at less than 300.
