Hey everyone,
This is my first post to this forum but I've been reading here for years. I've run into a problem installing my rear Koni Yellow struts on my '98 z24 cavalier. Unfortunately the lower spring perch on my old strut is part of the strut and not removable. I've tried cutting it off to reuse it but it's left the perch with little usable metal and I'm afraid it won't support the spring very well. I've called the dealer to get the part but they haven't been helpful, and don't seem to recognize the perch as a sellable item. Does anyone have a GM part number for this perch or have a couple they'd be willing to part with through replacing their struts?
Thanks,
Aaron
The perch is separate, it just looks like it's welded on to the strut if it has a lot of rust/debris buildup on it. Just clamp the strut in a vice, get a big hammer and beat the thing towards the top of the strut. Beat all the way around the bottom side... eventually it will come loose. I just did it on my 99 z24... trust me it is separate.
I'll see if I can get a part number off mine this week in case you still need new ones.

the struts which I replaced were not OEM. I tried the big hammer approach with no luck unfortunately. If you can find a part number though I'd appreciate it. I'm going to take a trip out to a different dealership after work and see if they can help me.
any oem replacement are the same, hold the strut upside down, and hammer it off...
works on any oem replacement.
dont need a vice, or anything besides a hammer, or rubber hammer, hold the strut out, with the piston rod facing the ground, hammer on the back side of the spring perch.
last i checked gm doesnt sell the perch seperately... its part of the ENTIRE strut.... buying a strut from gm is gonna be expensive... 40$ from local autoparts stores.
Sounds like he's already destroyed his stock ones.
Just go to the local dealers and ask if you can have a pair of blown ones. If they don't have any lying around, head to the wreckers.
Event: Are you sure all the aftermarket ones have removable perches as well, and that they're exactly the same diameter? It just doesn't seem unreasonable at all that KYB's or MONROE's or some other brand might be different enough to not work.
well i;ve used KYB ones before for a koni install. although for reds, but yellows should be the same front and rear.
monroe never tried.
gabriels vsts those work as well cause i gave a pair of my old ones for someone local to use.
majority are similar or same sized.
good call on the blown ones from the dealer deal though
