I am installing the rear part o my baer big brake kit and have a question. for the rear there are 4 centering rings, 2 black, to brass color. which do you use on an 05 cav?
There should have only been two. Are you sure you didn't mix in your hub rings from your wheels or something?
If all 4 actually did come with the kit, do they look the same? They included brass coloured ones with my kit that caused me all sorts of problems. They fit somewhat loosely and didn't sit flush against the rotors. After a few days of trying to figure out why my rotors were shifting (I think I slightly bent one because of this) I talked to Baer and they ended up sending me some nicely machined new ones that fit like a glove.
yes both black and brass were sent in the rear sealed bag. the brass fit loose as ell but the black fit perfect. thanks for the quick reply wild weasel
No problem.
Throw the brass coloured ones out. Trust me on this one!
Yup.....What Weasel said.....I received both the brass colored rings and the black ones....I tossed the brass ones.......
Funny Weasel, although I get minor play with the brass rings when the lugs are off, they are fine with the tire on and lugs tightened.
Not mine. Because they've got an angled edge and don't sit flush, my rotors were actually wedging themselves up onto the side of them (always torqued down properly) and then riding crooked against the pads. I was pretty pissed when I figured out what the problem was!
I bet you were pissed. $300 is a bunch to have to replace the pads and rotors.
I'm glad that I read this post. I just order my front and rear Baer kits and this would have saved me some headaches..

with the rear installed when i spin the rotor i hear it touching the pads is this normal at first?

I didn't have to replace them. The only reason I suspect it's slightly bent is because when it's really cold out, I can hear them making a slight noise at very slow speeds. It doesn't even shimmy or anthing when braking from higher speeds.
Baer has a lifetime warranty on their rotors against warping so if I had an ongoing issue, I'd have had them replace it.

That's normal. In a disc brake system, the pads should always be in contact with the rotor. They create friction and slow the car when pressure is applied. When the pressure is released, nothing pulls them away from the rotor. There's just no pressure being applied.
That being the case, when you first install them they're likely going to rub a bit until they've been smoothed down. If it's still like that after 50 miles, then you may have issues.
wild weasel thanks for the information. i thought it was normal but figured i'd double check
However, I will caution you to check it out to make sure the E-brake is not dragging. That's what happened to me. The spring at the caliper must not have been set correctly. So it rubbed a little, and then rubbed alot when that spring fell out.

This is why I suggested he check again in 50 miles or so. Once the pads are worn smooth, when you let go of the brake you should be able to freely spin the wheel. If there is still resistance there, then something is putting pressure on the caliper.
I had ebrake adjustment issues as well. I didn't have the spring set on the cable.
weasel - is your E-brake functional now?
just curious if my whole rotor is going to rust. baer said where the calipers touch will but it goes away when you stop.
thanks again everyone
Yes, they will rust. You can paint the centers. The surface where the pads meet will clean themselves from the brake action.
Tom wrote:weasel - is your E-brake functional now?
Yep. The handle doesn't really pull enough cable for what the calipers are designed for so I have to press the pedal and then pull the handle, but it works properly. Will hold the car on any hill.

This depends on what rotors you have. With the Baer kit, I think all the rotors come zinc washed so it should only rust on the fire path, where the pads make contact. Any rust that develops while the car is sitting still (especially if they were wet) gets scraped off on your first couple stops. Nothing to be concerned with.
Mine have yet to develop any rust on any of the coated parts.
You must have got a better set then me
Also, My e-brake cable must have popped off of the handle. I can pull then handle all the way and it doesn't move the cable at all. Oh well, I guess this is my next project.
