Radiator fan/AC issues
Friday, July 23, 2010 7:07 PM
I have an issue I was hoping I could get some help with. My radiator fan will not turn on, and my engine has been overheating if stuck in traffic. I have tested power to the fan directly and it is fine. Also, my AC only blows cold when i'm moving fast, i'm assuming because the movement is cooling the radiator instead of the fan.

i have a 2003 pontiac sunfire. I have done some forum reading and some people suggest it may be the Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. I do not know where this sensor is. Can someone help me with my problem?

thanks.

In the head somewhere, not 100% on the ecos. It's on the drivers side on the 2.2. Just replaced both of them on my 91 easy fix. Could also be your fan relay?

Have you checked the fan fuse or the fan relay yet?

If you have tested for power AND ground here at the fan plug in harness, then replace the fan. Fans automatically come on when ac is commanded.

Your WHAT hurts?

I have a similar issue with my 99 ld9. Radiator fan stopped working and the car got warm.

Replaced every aspect of the system other than the ecu. Fan, relay, fuses, coolant temp sensor.

I think its ecu related as I get no signal to the relay to kick the fan on. Last time I had an issue with the relay I was able to jump it to test the fan. Now there is signal.

Very annoying. I just have the fan wired to an external switch in the car that works like the override.

So what aspect of the system did you change? I'm just curious because you basically just listed all of them.

So anyone got it to work finally? I have the same issues... but the A/C compressor starts to cycle.. I know it should not do that....when stopped at a light or just idling at the house. It blows cold air when car is moving..

Gotta be a bad ground. The ECU activates the relay via a switched ground. If a ground is bad, then the ECU can't short to it and turn on the relay.

The first thing I did was replace the fan, and that didn't help. The old fan powers fine when I wire it straight to a battery. I'm debating wiring my fan to a a fuse tap so the fan turns on whenever the car is on.

It is the ignition switch. I know it sounds insane, but I had the exact same issues. Costs 40, kinda a pain to do, but it fixes the fan issue. I too had already replaced the temp sensor. The relays were fine, fan powered up when voltage was directly applied. Trust me, it will work.
