GM S/C: Bad bearing? Need warranty info.
Monday, July 11, 2005 4:36 PM
Hey guys, I think my blower might be ready to spit out a bearing and I lent out my instruction sheet with the warranty info in it.

First off, has anyone had bearings go bad on one? It's making a really rough noise at idle and the GM mechanic I brought it to swears it's a bearing noise.

Secondly, can someone let me know what the warranty procedure is at the back of the instruction manual? I believe there's a number to call for more info, among other things.

Thanks people!!

well the SC is only warrantied for 12,000 miles or one year, so if your out of that, take it to a shop that specializes in rebuilding superchargers, and while your at it, have them replace all the bearings and give it a good port n polish

If your still under warranty the GM Dealership should take care of it. If it's not under warranty and you have to pay for it you'll have to call Magnuson Products at 1-805-642-8833.

This is the first one I've heard of going out.

BTW; Nice to meet you Kevin...

The coupler is what usually goes out in the snout. It's a hard piece of plastic with 6 holes in it. You can find them on the net for about 30 bucks.

The GM mechanics said it sounds like a bearing noise, and it was much more prevalent around the middle than it was at the snout. They were putting a screwdriver up to it like a stethoscope and listening to it. All doctor-like.

I talked to the warranty people and they said to have it looked at and then have the mechanic call them. Now I've gotta get that arranged.

Does anyone know if there are instructions for the s/c installation online anywhere? Has anyone scanned and posted them or anything? They're going to need all the torque specs and what not...

well the bearings are at 1 end or the other , the only thing in the middle is the 2 rotors

unless your talking where the snout attaches

but let us know what they find

Jayson: Can you just post up the part number for the instructions? I'm sure the whole list of part numbers was posted somewhere here but my searching isn't turning them up.

Thanks bro!! I just want to be able to give it to the mechanics in case they need to order it somehow. Really, they should be able to download a copy if they need it!

Mine made that kind of noise and it ended up being the idler bearing, i replaced the bearing and hub asmb. with just a bearing i got at a bearing and drive store, workes great and its a little biger so the belts tighter.

I'll find out tonight what the mechanic thinks. Later on I'll post a short video I took of the sound.

Well the master mechanic that looked at it tonight said it's not the blower. It's something undeneath and he suspects it may be the tensioner. Basically, the extra load on the belt when the air conditioning comes on is causing something to grind and it's resonating through the body of the supercharger, making it seem like it's coming from within the supercharger.

So the car is safe to drive but I've still gotta figure out what's wrong.

I seem to recall someone here having the idler pulley go bad. Does anyone remember who that was? I'd be curious as to what it did before it let go.

I'll mess around with it a bit tomorrow night to see if I can't pin down the problem a little better.

how bad is the sound? is it only when the a/c comes on?

2 years ago i had my a/c start to seize, and when you turned on the a/c all hell would break loose because the a/c wouldn't spin....but the belt would

but this was a REALLY loud screeching sound, which might not be what you have, but im just throwing out ideas.....

and john, stop giving out my chajah manual!

Us 3.8 guys have trouble with a bearing in our blowers and it looks like its walmost in the middle of the blower if you hunt down the noise. Its the needle bearings at the end of the rotors on the TB side. Not exactly a do-it-yourself thing either since the damn things have to be pimped out with grease. The needle bearings weren't made to be replaced. If something goes bad your just supposed to buy a new blower housing.
I don't see how an idler pulley can make noise and travel up to the S/C and make it sound like its coming from there.
