I have a stock "97" 5 spd. Cavalier. Yesterday I went to grab 2nd gear and something broke. The shift lever just flops around now, and I'm stuck in 1st gear. I have the console unscrewed, but I can't get the shift knob off. Doesn't it just screw off? Oh, does anyone know what might have broken?
Thanks
I don't think it unscrews... there may be a C-clip at the front of the knob that holds it onto the shaft though.
Sounds like you brake a shift cable...?

It either has a C clip in the front, or it just pulls off. if it doesn't have a clip just pull really hard and it will slide off.
completely take off the center console youll see that the cable came off from the shifter and align it up and just get a screwdriver and pry it back in to the shifter
Please don't worry about gas i'll go get the kikomen for your rice.
it sounds to me like the pin that connects the shifter on the tranny's side of things broke--look under the ABS module under the hood and you should see the shift mechanism outside your tranny on a metal rod going into it--if that mechanism spins freely on that rod without shifting the tranny then you've broke that pin, and it's a pain in the @!#$ to get out...
