Making My Own "Short" Shifter
Monday, February 13, 2006 1:48 PM
I have heard that you can cut the original Shifter, to give it the short look. I was wondering if you can remove the reverse lockout, and cut the shifter so the stock knob is where the reverse lockout is. How hard would this be and where can I find procedures for this.
Thanks

Just buy a real short shifter, you'll be a lot happier with it.

you will need to replace the stock shift knob with an aftermarket one.

here is what i did the first time.

take off the stock knob.
remove the plastic peice around the shifter (that is your reverse lockout) it just slides up and off
then get a pipe cutter and cut it done about 2 inches
then install new knob

Its still not going to be a short throw, why do you want it to look shorter?

This is true...even though i drive automatic....you should really just save a get a real one. Youll be alot happier with it...I know having it look shorter might look "cooler" but its meant for performance not looks. Well maybe not all performance

Why can't I use the stock one?

I don't want to spend anymore money right now, and I thought it would be a fun project.

you can always use your stock one. most people who are looking for a short shifter are looking to be able to hit their gears faster. if you just want the look with out spending money, then chop it off go as low as you want. but trust me, it will be well worth the moeny when you do purchase one and you wont want to go back. another helpful hint. if you do plan on purchasing one. I would recommend going ahead and spending the extra money on the b&m . I have several friends that have ebay ones, and although they are shorter and the throw is better, mine is a little shorter and the throw is smoother

Eventually I will get a B&M but I am looking for a project right now.

it is possible to make this short shifter out of a stock one, although i did one it was not on a J-body but it was on a del sol that was a friend of mine. He told me what he wanted and i cut it about 2 1/2 inches shorter with a lathe at school, also i re-threaded it with the lathe so all he had to do was screw the stock ball back on. He had no complaints and said it worked good. yes it is possible to make one from a stock piece but you are going to spend some time on it so depend on what you want to do?!

that link sums most of it up, except on the knob.....as you have a 2004, there is no clip on your knob, so no need to cut a groove for it to fit into, however, your stock knob is pressed onto the stick, so be prepared to have to break it to get it off, or if you manage to get it off in one peice, you need glue or JB weld to secure it back on, which is why many suggest a new knob.

now, you won't get much of any performance gain from cutting your stock shifter, but it looks a ton better, so I for one say, do it, and when you can afford it, get the B&M unit.

cutting it won't hurt anything, so you may as well do it

i dont see how its making it a "short throw". its just making the length of the shifter shorter. its not actually decreasing the throw

I just cut mine and made it shorter. I didn't do it for performance, I just wanted it to be level with my arm when I rested it on the arm rest. I like it... and it was cheap.

the way I see it, if you just want a short shifter for looks, just cut your stock one, why spend the money, if all you want is looks. this is one case where i gotta say, cheaper is better

I say go for it. I wasn't worried about the length f the throw, but I liked the look. I cut about two inches off the stick, tossed the reverse lockout, andt ook a tap set and threaded the top inch and a half of the stick so that I could use a wider variety of aftermarket knobs. I currently have a polished aluminum B&M t-Handle on it.
Like this MMMMM Nice!

I also have an auto and I'm interested in making this thing a little shorter. The one in my car seems like its a foot long atleast.

Before I got my B&M, I cut mine down AND kept the reverse lifter. I did this to bring it back to stock height since the MOMO knob I have is about an inch taller than the stock one.

Here's my instructions: http://www.wildweasel.ca/j-body/HowTo/shiftknob.asp

Now I've got the MOMO knob on the B&M so it's around stock height but with shorter throws.

Be Very very careful...... I had this same idea worked great its alittle harder to shift but not crazy hard i got my shift knob from pep boys couldnt wait to put it on i struggled for 5 mins to get the stock knob off finally it came off i pulled so hard when it finally gave it shot up and cracked my nose wide open.....Yes there will be blood with the removal of the stock knob......lol

I guess Louisiana summers paid off....my knob just pulled off with little to no effort, and no nosebleeds
