Thursday, August 03, 2006 6:18 PM
I am wanting an all black interior but do not/currently cant shell out much $$ to have someone do them so i was wondering if anyone has ever done it themselves??
what did you use/tools?
any tips?

even if you havent done them yourself, but maybe know someone who does this type of work, what tools are needed?

would i be able to lay the fabric down over my current seats and "sew" them on and also use a spray adhesive??

Thanks for the info!!

You don't want to use Spray Adhesive.

Your Carpet just order it in black. i forgot the company but they can get alot of colors and its like 99 bucks for your car..

The seats, well, i think your gunna have a hard time turning black cloth into nice looking seats. All that stitching and work...

I suggest going to a shop and having it done or finding black seats.

Theres also a company that makes new seat covers.

Upholstering is a skill and not something you and just whip up yourself without training and practice.

Your best bet, on the cheap, is probably to just get some seat covers.

i have 2 friends(guy and girl couple) that did their own. the girl knows how to use a sewing machine, and she did his neon seats and her cav seats, and they came out AMAZING!! not that just anyone could do it, but it was her first time, and she did them all perfect!! she then went on to do the rears, and those came out great also.

i dont think i could have done them good my first try

but it is possible

Well i have done my own just cause i like to learn how its done and it feels good when someone asks: Where did you buy thoses and i can tell them I made them myself. I did a 87 Camaro Z i went to a place called fabric-land and looked for tough fabric canvas type in Electric blue and black it cost me about $100 can, Your going to need what they call a hog ring pliers and a needle with a small hook in it to cut the stitches out one by one..A hog ring is a little u shaped ring the clamps the rod that holds the fabric to the metal frame of the seat (gives it that tight look) you'll need chalk to use as a pattern form from the old fabric and a sewing machine (higher end) cause a simple one will not sew heavy fabs, Mine didn't! i did it by hand The only thing i had someone else do was the words Cargasum on the front seats in stitch by machine. you can even buy a wheel cutter that will make the holes for sewing and it make a straight line so it looks like a pro did it. its not hard it just takes time. i did the front to seats and the bottom back two seats and the fold down upper part in a week and a half black in the middle and blue on the outsides .. the cavy is next after that interior paint job your going to have to phone a upholster (Car/ Home) to find out where they bought there hog ring clamper mine was $20 But if you ever put your car in a show and you tell they "You" customized your car thats brownie points ! good luck!!

I did my rear seats with suede (grey & black matched w/ my ractive racing seats) and i added about an inch foam in it to make it more comfortable. It's isn't really hard as i thought.

I have a little knowledge about upholstering though, and my old lady has a sewing mach.

I'll post some pics some.

I did my friend Gary's car a couple of years ago. It was tedious as all hell, but overall I was happy with the result. I wish had had taken more pictures of it. The only picture I can find right now is on his page, and it's not very clear, but here it is:

One thing I would recommend is that if you are doing vinyl or leather, do not use a light duty machine. You will want to use something with a flywheel on it. I actually contemplated getting an old used one because although they are not very advanced, they are smooth and consistent, plus they have a good amount of clearance.

The only thing I wa snot really happy with, although you could never see it, was the headrests. The cushion in those things are hard as a rock, so it's hard as hell to squeeze into the new cover without damaging the threads, and also to sew the cover shut after it's on is a biotch.

After you get the stock covers pulled up around the sides, heat the sitting area with a hair dryer to carefully remove it (this portion is glued down to fit into all the crevices).

When you put the new covers on, use a good spray adhesive on the sitting area, and take your time to push all the material into the crevices, being careful to make sure you are properly lined up. You won't be able to fix this afterward!

Take the factory covers apart using a seam ripper, and then use the pieces for templates. Keep in mind that there is some stretching, so you will have to free-hand in some spots.

I hope this helps.

i Turn the head covers inside out and used alittle rubbing lotion on the head rest to slide it in the lotion evapted after a day or so and the glue i all really added to the top and added more to the sides after and sewed the rest up under
