My New Custom Garage! Mucho Text, Pics Below

It took me about 6 weeks and I had to completely strip the old garage and make my wife throw away a LOT of stuff, but it's finally almost finished! I did all of the design, labor, painting and accessorizing myself.

Every single wall surface is pegboard, painted 2-tone to match the workshop, cabinets, etc. The 6" border trim and chair railing are diamond plate vinyl attached to 1/8" grey PVC and 3M-taped to the walls. Same thing with the door panels on the interior door and rear of the main door. I also "diamond plated" the mini-fridge under the TV (fully cable integrated). The overall effect in here is lots of chrome that reflects the blue and graphite all over the place.

All cabinets and work table area are from the Coleman collection sold at Lowe's. Shop lights are diamond plate, as are the light switch and power outlet covers (and the clipboard on the wall!). Before flaming me for using DP vinyl, keep in mind that it's not only more expensive but entirely impractical to use the real thing for the trim I did. It's just too heavy and I could not drill it into all of the doors, etc ( I do have to sell the place one day).

Shop is fully outfitted with every tool I could ever need. Complete set of Cobalt hand tools and B&D power tools (and yes, I do actually use them all). Each wall cabinet has a category (painting supplies, cleaning supplies, car wash supplies, etc etc). Even the yard tools were replaced with blue versions to match (snow shovel, brooms, etc).

The crowning glory of this garage is the flooring. I used a checkerboard pattern of graphite and royal blue to match my Cav. Check it out at RaceDeck.com, great stuff.
And my favorite accessory is the clock over the workbench - it's a disc brake with blue neon accents I found on clearance at Spencer's.

Just need a stool, air compressor and more real diamond plate items such as a trash can, etc and it's done. I've got a laser parking guide that shoots a beam down from the ceiling on order, and the yellow RKSport door-ding guards are coming next. I can get the car in with a little room to spare. The car will only be in here during especially bad weather or for small projects that I can do when it's cold out, etc.

These pics do not do the place justice, but not too bad. Please enjoy your "tour" and let me know what you think. Not my dream garage of all time (too small) but a great place to work until I get the cash to buy a bigger house one day.

Thanks for looking! Look forward to your comments and suggestions.

-Steve

Looks good, job very well done!
My question is though, why clean up the garage like that and not use it for your car daily/nightly?

idk if i'd make my garage that good lookin'. i'd be afraid to drive my car in it, let alone work on the damn thing.

makes no sense to me, but i think i'd rather work in my garage not live in it?

its JMO, so chill.

Thanks guys - I will take a ton of new pics tonight and post later.

I'll post some a reply to answer some of the questions later when I get to work.

OK, I'm at "work" now, so I have more Internet time...

Sorry about the small pics, CarDomain is the only place that I can host pics at the moment. I'll make some changes/add new pics and throw you guys a link tonight so you'll have the option to enlarge them.

As far as messing the garage up / not using it:

The RaceDeck flooring is extremely tough and chemical resistant. Oil and other fluids come right up without staining it. I scratched the hell out of 2 tiles the other day when I was building some wire shelving for my wife's closet, and I was able to buff the scatches out using only my foot while wearing a sock. It's designed to withstand the weight of any vehicle, so driving on it is no big deal. I just try to make sure I don't have any gravel stuck in my tires, etc. As the garage gets older, I will probably be a little less anal about stuff like that.

The garage is JUST big enough to pull the car in and open one door enough to work on the interior. Also plenty of room to get under the hood or in the trunk. I'll probably keep the car in there a lot this winter, but other than that it's kind of a pain. I just wanted to add some extra square footage to my townhouse that looked nice enough to show people and maybe put on my showboard/website when I design them. Plus, it will help sell the place when I'm ready. It's really intended to be a part of the house to work on projects than a home for my Cavalier, but suits both uses pretty well. I wish it was about 3-4 feet wider.

I'm eventually going to mount blue LED tubes and speakers behind/in the walls, but not this year. Now that it's about done, the time has come to get back to my car projects. It will be nice to be able to wire LEDs, etc during the day since I can pull in and turn the lights off to test stuff.

It really did not cost that much, just over 2K with all of the new tools, etc. I'd be happy to assist anyone who wants to build something similar by sending links, how-to's, etc.
This project has bankrupted me and I'll be doing 15-20 dollar projects to the Cav (new LEDs and redoing some wiring here and there) until I can pay back the house savings account. You won't be seeing anything else major from me until at least Spring...

Check out the new pics late tonight - thanks!

Using a jack:

Never thought of that one...
I'd say that I don't really have enough room for any projects involving a jack and would use the driveway for that (or probably call a mechanic!) BUT if I did use a jack in there, it would probably be best to put a thin piece of wood or metal under it. I'm sure the floor could take it, but it would probably leave a little indentation.

sndsgood:

Thanks for the offer - let me get those pics together and I'll send them to you. I've been meaning to email you anyway because my next audio project is the rear seat delete - I'm going for a look kind of like yours but have no idea where to start...
Yeah, doing a 3-car garage would run you a little over 2 grand. Mine was 700 including shipping. Installation is super-easy.

Thanks, and keep those comments and questions coming! I need to justify this enormous expense any way I can (that money could have done a LOT to my car!).

Can you give me some more info on that laer beam you have for parking? Thats one of the product's ive thought would be great "if only someone made it". Looks like i might be inluck.

Im in the middle of a garage reno myself. Not going as extreme as you did, but it should be nice. I've had 2 new insulated steel doors installed (old ones were wood), putting in a bunch of new lighing, (cold-weather rated flourescents), some new outlets, laundry chute from upstairs that curves into the laundry room and a couple belt-drive garage door openers. Some new pegboard and shelving is gonna go in to. Im also gonna be running a water line out front for washing cars, etc..

It looks amazing BTW, i cant wait to see the bigger pics.
