I.C.E in the middle of winter....
Sunday, February 12, 2006 11:46 AM
So after a friend sold me her head unit, as she wants to play with two wheeled toys, I decided it was time for a little upgrade to the stock headunit....

what I got...Alpine IVA-D300

All the parts with the harness shortened a little bit.

Here is a close-up of the monitor and controls:

And yes it was installed upside down for a reason....

Here we are tapping in for power:

Had to get switched power and a solid constant, needless to say the fact that I have no foglights left a nice open fuse hole in my car.

Where things used to be:

Had to remove a little bit of material from the back side of the radio hole so that the headunit would fit in correctly.

And the finale:

Almost looks like a regular stereo in the car doesn't it?

And for the world to see:

With the unit installed in the mounting plate upside down it does a couple of things: allows for a little bit of useful vent, and places a nice place for some switches in an easy to reach place (those will be coming soon).

But weren't there more parts in the first pic. The little box is a DC to DC inverter and is mounted inside the dash, under th airbag, but the brain box is something you should be able to access. The previous owner mounted it in the trunk and removed their spare tire, but I drive to many miles for that so:

Here is the glovebox:

But when you bend over from a seated position this is what you see:

By installing it here it allows easy access to add in the PS2, a TV tuner etc, and I am waiting for the tax return to add the amp for the front and rear speakers. Rear speakers are currently Infinity Reference 6"x9" 3-ways, fronts will be Infinity reference components, with an Infinity Amp as well to power everything.

And this is why I did it:

Anyone who is around me know my kids do everything with me, and this will keep them entertained a little bit at the shows, club meetings, the trips to those events, and the like.

And a special thanks to:

Pirate Pete (Chad) for helping with the demolition and installation, made it more enjoyable to have someone help!

More to come and this is the all the inside will have changed for a while, performance mods are next......

Nice.....Can you post a pic of what the screen looks like from further away......and one how it would look as if I were sitting the the driver seat.......

And does it have a removable face or do you no choice to leave it in all the time.....

Looking really nice, how much air flow do you get out of those vents with part of the screen blocking them.

Also how much material did you have to cut out

I take it,its a 00-04 cavy

you could of just got power from the ign wire with a fuse on it unstead of going into the fuse box etc.Because you always need to have the key on anyways to listen to the radio eetc.

I have a spare fusepanel in my basement, and this way of I ever want to remove the stereo from the car I remove two wires from the fusepanel, and I can transplant it in a matter of minutes, and if there are any issue I have easy access to the fuse in the side panel of the dash.

Nothing has been removed that would prohibit the easy reinstall of the OEM stereo into the car. The only give away would be a couple of holes in the glovebox that I had to run the wires through, but you really would have to look to see them. I could have the stereo out of the car in about 15 miuntes from the word go, and most f that time would be the removal of the dash.

I will be adding in a switch so that we can use the headunit with the car off, and no key in the ignition, I just need to remember to shut the switch off before I start the car (the brain box gets all screwy otherwise). That switch will be located in the block-off over the radio so you won't ever see it when the screen is open.

We ended up removing about 2" of material from the backside of the closeout so that there wouldn't be any interference issues. I was thinking about the before shot, but we had WAY to much fun with the hole saw making the cutout, and by the time I realized it we were done.

Hey thanks for answering some of my questions

now to the issue of the vents, how much air flow do you get out of those vents with part of the screen blocking them.

Is there enough heat/Ac to come out and keep the car cool/hot.

the reason im asking this is because i plan to install one very soon and know the screen blocks the vents and all.
