Can I use higher octane (Super) in my car ( 05 ecotec) or it's better to stay with normal fuel. I heard that it can be bad for the internals? Does this guy told me bs or he was right? I'm planning on going at the track this weekend for the last time of the season... (Low greens $$$..... hate that)
it won't hurt you to run it...but you don't need to run it
grillrd is right...it wont hurt your engine..but it just wont help anything either..higher octane gas if for higher compression engines...dont fall for all hype your hear about octane boosters and what not...its just commercialism

As mentioned, it won't hurt but it's a waste of money. You won't get better performance from it with your engine.
Actualy studies have shown that useing a higher octaine fuel then required can lead to
carbon build-up and even higher emisions at the tailpipe. In the end you don't need it and you'll just be wasting money. And you may get the smog police after you.

Da Ghost, I wouldn't suggest upgrading untill you start to work your motor. I went from 86 Octane (Regular) to 89 Octane (Premium) after I got my Cams & Ported and Polished Head installed to have it run smoother.
Untill then...it's not necessary.

I thought higher octane was for lower compression, not higher.
Supercharged engines, which is a lower compression than N/A, uses higher octane. N/A engines use lower octane.

You've got it all mixed up.
The reason they often lower compression on a boosted (turbo or S/C) engine is because the air is being compressed BEFORE it goes into the engine, and then further compressed once it's in there.
So while the compression ratio of the engine is lower, the amount that the air/fuel is actually compressed relative to S.A.P. is higher.
Higher octane is for high-compression OR boosted engines. Basically, any case where predetonation due to compression may become an issue.

Exactly...nice expination Wild Weasel

Ahh I see... thanks for explaining.
Killa where are you at that supreme is only 89 octaine? Down here in MD reg is 87
Mid-grade is 89, and the good stuff is 93 or 94 octaine. Hell at the Sunoco station they have 95 and 99 octaines as well at the pump. And no its not Cam 2, it doesn't have that funky smell that the raceing stuff does.
Or do we just have really good gas down here?

jackalope, every gas station around here calls it different names...some call it Premium some call it Silver. Usually they call the highest one Supreme or Super whatever.

I was just curious thats all. Those octains seemed low thats all. You should know I wasn't starting anything I was just asking.

You make me laugh...you always apologize and say "I'm not trying to sound like an jerk" when really you don't come off as one. I have absolutley no problem with you...I actually rather like you on here and if you had AOL I would talk to you more often.
