I have heard this term used alot in racing what does it mean and how do you do it? sounds dumb but i wanna know
It's a method used to get all your drivetrain components spinning at the same speed so you can smoothly downshift without upsetting the balance of the car.
Generally, when you want to downshift it's because your RPM's are low and you want to jump back up into the power band.
You put the clutch in and shift to neutral. Now you let the clutch out and bring the revs up to where the need to be for the gear you're downshifting to. This gets the engine and input shaft spinning at the desired speed. Now you put the clutch in again and put it into gear, all the while holding the engine rpm's up where you need them. Since the input shaft is already spinning fast enough, you'll find that the stick just glides right into gear without any force. You don't need the synchros to bring it up to speed. Now when you let the clutch back out, you're ready to mash the throttle and accelerate, likely out of a turn or something.
This sounds like it's going to take a few seconds but if you're a pro, you can do it naturally in no time at all. You can actually shift to neutral and bring the revs up without putting the clutch in at all and then just clutch to put it in the lower gear. With a lighter flywheel, this can all happen in a fraction of a second.
And if you ever hear anyone suggest you double-clutch in a drag race a la TFATF... well just chuckle to yourself and walk away.

In everyday driving, it's mostly unnecessary, but if you've tried downshifting to 1st and found it hard to get it into gear, you'll be able to see the effects of double-clutching. Try it and the stick will glide right in.
You used to have to do it on damn near all manual trans cars waaay back in the day
before syncros were put into them. But like said above its kinda not needed on the street anymore.

damn. i thought it meant to pop the clutch while your on the gas. i used to do that on my old s10 as i hit 2nd
