I am looking to buy a 2002 Z24 but am seeing a difference in several 2002 Z24's I have looked at. Does anyone know why some of the 02 Z24's have an extra lower lip on the front facia. It is like an extra ground effect piece that screws to the lower bumper cover. Half the cars I have looked at have them and half don't. My friends is a 2002 and his has it. Did GM do a 'midyear' add on to the 2002 Z24's??
00 & 01 Z24's didn't have the lip. 2002 Z24's (and in the US, LS Sports) do.
I recall someone saying only certain colours of Z24's (and LS Sports) came with the lip... but I find that difficult to believe.
The mid-02 change was to the drivetrain... the 2.4L engine was replaced by the 2.2L Ecotec.
(It wasn't until 03 models that the Ecotec was standard... no more 2200 engine)
Yeah I know that the 00 and 01's don't have the lip but noticed many of the 02's of any color don't have it either. Just wondering why that was. I like the look of it and want to find one with it. Must be a 2.4 also. I have wanted add in the wanted section currently.
if the 02 doesnt have the lip then look to see if the slots are in the bumper
if the slots are there , then the lip was ripped out and is very common
if the lip is missing and there is no slots , then the bumper was replaced and they used the incorrect parts , and the previous owner either didnt know or didnt care
Hmmmmmm. Yeah that is a good point.
So all the 02 Z24's had the lip then? Even the early year models with the 2.4L?
I only ask because I know certain other options were delayed and only came out mid-year like the Ecotec's did.
Things like the polished wheels and painted mirrors and handles weren't available at the bigging of the 02 model year. Many still came with the 00-01 Z24 wheels and unpainted features.
According to my Canadian sales brochure for the 2002 model year... fascias were standard on all Z24's, both coupe and sedan, for the entire model year.
They also came as part of the VL Sport appearance package (note this is NOT A MODEL... just a package).
You could get a Z24 in white, red, silver, blue or black. No yellow... (for 2002, at least). no "silverleaf metallic" either.. or "light pewter metallic" .. or the ONLY one I wanted... the "Monteray Maroon Metallic"... damnit...
The brochure does mention the "interim availability" on the split 5-spoke rims.. (doesn't mention that you'd get the 00-01 rims in their place, but whatever).
I find this surprising though.... you could get the interior in graphite, neutral, or "medium gray"... which I've only seen once in a 99 Z24 belonging to Mark Pain...
Ok, I have seen some 02 models with and w/o painted mirrors. I can't remember if all 02's had fully painted fascias to match the body or not but have seen most like that. My friends 02 Z24 has the lip on the fascia, non painted mirrors, painted door handles a 2.4L and the non polished aluminum rims.
To put another wrench into things, GM did NOT put that front lip on all the LS Sport through 02. I know that some people have knocked them off but I have also talked to owners that bought their LS Sports new and had the crome wheels, painted mirrors & handles, fog lights and the different molding but no front lip (Bumper w/ holes for it) but they had the back one. The LS 's were to have the lip kit too and it is the same deal. I think there was a lot of confusion when GM did the change.
That's GM for ya!
Quote: no ofence man but if you have so much experience in all that why does your car look like crap?
If they had the rear lip and not the front one, I'd seriously suspect that someone trashed it and just removed it.
They started painting the whole front bumper in 01. The only Z24's with the grill and fog light areas unpainted were the 00 models.
^ I'm not so sure about that. My buddy has an 01 Z24, and it's unpainted. So are all the ones in the 01 sales brochure. I thought it was 02 that switched to painted everything... with a few exceptions of course... maybe it was the early 02's that lacked the painted mirrors and door handles...?
the 02's with out painted handles or mirrors(it was 1 ot the other) with the lips were the base model sports , also some base sport models had the low spoiler , and some had the tall spoiler
all the 02 Z24's ive seen coupe and sedan have all had painted mirrors and handles , all US Z24's had the pained 00-01 Z24 wheels , and all US ls sports had the chrome LS sport wheels
some dealers did swap wheels , to make sales , as well as some people swaping the chrome wheels on the other models
base cars had the machine faced wheels , and in some case dealer swaped also , and same with the upper level cars had the machine swaped , due to the same reasons
all the 01 Z24's ive seen have had the 2 tone front bumper
My American 02 Z24 was built in September 2001. I bought it in October 2001. It came stock with the 2.4 and all lower lips. A couple of weeks after I bought it the lot was filled up with LS Sports that carried the 2.2 Ecotec.
I don't have that lip on my 02 4 doors Z24.
I have the painted 5 spoke rims, painted handles and mirrors. The slots are there but not lip. I've notice alot of base model with the slots in the bumper and they don't have the lip so I don't believe they all took it off. I've seen alot of 02 Z24 without the lip here.
And there's no sign of the lip on the bumper. I'll buy one at the dealership since it's the same price at the junkyard for the lip.
What I find a bit stupid is that I have the black interior with a beige roof ?!?!?!?!? Even at the dealership alot of 02 Z24 don't have the lip.
Btw, my car was bought in november 2001.

I'm skipping half the thread here, and am just going to throw in what I noticed. In late '01 I planned on buying an '02 Z. I saw from a sales brochure that in '02 the Z was going to finally have the full lip kit, and then change to a new body style in '03. I waited and waited for the '02 Z's to come, out, and they finally came in midyear. They had the 2.4's, and the US had the LS Sports with the ecotec. I couldn't find an '02 with the lip kit and the 2.2 Ecotec anywhere in SK, that I could find. I also noticed that when they finally released them, they changed the base models to include the Z lip kit and red bowties, but not the wheels, and you couldn't get some of the power options that you could on the Z. They continued this in '03 and onward, offering the exterior styling of the Z (without the wheels), but not all the power options that the Z had (Z type).
So to answer your question, yes, they did a change in mid '02 to add the lips. I'm guessing that if you check the build dates of the '02's you are looking at and pay attention to the month that they were built, you will see the trend.

Kinda reminds me of this gold sunfire i saw earlier today, it had a GT front bumper with lights etc, but had the rear and sides of a normal Sunfire, along with the single muffler dual outlet common on 2.2L Sunfire's.
I used to own an 02 Z.. Bought it in Dec, 2001. Was built around June 2001. It had the 2.4, with the lip kit, speckled red interior.. My gf bought her 02 Cavalier in April 2002, it's just a base auto 2.2 ohv, black in color.. My friend at work has an 02 cavalier, yellow in color, 5 speed with the 2.2 ohv, it also has the lip kit.. The lip kit is really fragile, and very expensive to replace.. Cost me close to 400$ Can, painted and installed.. Total rip off.

I was selling GM back then. At least in Canada, all the Z24's came with the lip package. It was an option on lesser models. 700cdn if I recall.
I remember the red fleck interior was available early but not after the grey ones came.
I swear over half the people with new Z's back them came back a week later after smashing them off. I think that's why you don't see many 2002's with lips now. They were all destroyed. Every customer freaked at the replacement cost. Few had it replaced.
Craig - what you said seems better. my Z was lessed before I got it so that's probably why it doesn't have it. I have the rear one tough.

My girlfriends 97 Z24 has the charcoal interior with the black headliner with moonroof and my friends 02 Z24 has charcoal interior with a light gray headiner and no moonroof. Wonder if the moonroof cars had the black headliner. GM did some strange stuff with these cars during production.
98 i think was the year they fazed out the graphite headliners
after that they were either light grey or neutral/tan
I have the neutral tan interior with the moon roof. Painted mirrors. 5 spoke Z rims, 5 Speed trans, Power windows, lip kit, z spoiler, and the 2.4 engine in my 2002 z24.
