To judge the prestigious award, Motor Trend's editorial staff conducted exhaustive off-road, street and track testing, and carefully considered essentials such as driving performance, engineering, design, safety and features.

Note that they did NOT evaluate price/value and fuel economy - two of the biggest reasons people buy vehicles today. As such I'd say their pick is extremely skewed. A number of other SUVs on their list are more deserving based on real-world standards.

Very true.
The only thing I can say in their favor is that it have the option of "Bluetec" diesel V6 which should move the MPG to approx 20/26, which is better then the 14/18 on a gas V8.
I think a reason they picked this SUV is bcause it is unit-body instead on a ladder-frame on a truck that size.
But, GMT-900s went through alot of good engineering for a sumo-suv and which should leave as a bench mark for large SUVs. 2009 Could not come soon enough which is when GM will be bringing out the "Duramax Jr" for light-duty trucks.
