Hi There,
I had been looking around various forums for information about the 4T40 transmissions and thanks to the forum members here now have some useful information to continue and improve my 1/4 mile times. It was suggested to put some information about my unusual project here.
This car model isn't that well known outside of the UK and a few other countries in Europe, it is a 1979 Mini Clubman Estate. These originally were built with a 1100cc 34bhp front mounted engine, I have converted this one to use 2 engines (1 front\1 rear) primarily for racing but it does still have some luxuries. The engines are the UK equivalent of the late 80's\early 90's GM 2.0l DOHC Ecotec and now using the 4T40e transmissions instead of manuals as the car was never really consistent enough for future development in manual form.
The car is currently running approx 170bhp (flywheel power, approx 150bhp @ wheels) per engine (I have a 50shot of NOS available to use on the rear once i'm happy with the auto setup). It's current best time is 12.66 seconds @ 107mph which was set when a few weeks ago on it's first outing using the auto transmissions (not using any NOS at the moment). I'm expecting this time to drop to a 12.5 or 12.4 next time as there were some gear selection issues due to a speed sensor problem and then hoping to get into the 11's with the NOS.
This is a link to my project website where there are details of the build, other pictures and some video clips from various events where I competed.

Hopefully if all goes well this year I will be converting the engines to turbo and running around 300-350bhp per engine giving me a total of around 700bhp in a 1100kg car so should be entertaining on the strip
Thanks,
Mike
good work, looks like a fun project, not road legal i'm assuming?

There was just a tiburon that had two 2.0 turbo's front and back, it was pretty tight, as is this one.
I approve of this fully
Oh and nice GTR

I think bigfoot is blurry,
that's the problem. It's not the photographer's fault. Bigfoot is blurry. And that's extra
scary to me. There's a large, out-of-focus monster, roaming the countryside.

oh thanks for posting, man!!
very cool vehicle! any more plans with her?
Anything worth doing is worth over doing.
Awesome project!!! Looks like great work.
Question. Did you think about going with one motor and turbo to save weight and still get the same power?
FU Tuning
Wow. Awesome project! Great work

I dig!
You are a stepping stone away to adapt a turbo from a Saab with minimal hassle.

Thanks for the comments
It's fully legal and road going with a heater, radio, heated front windscreen (no screen vents to stop it steaming up otherwise as it does tend to rain a lot here in the UK) etc as I really didn't want it to be a track only weapon.
Future plans once i'm happy with the current auto setup is to turbo both the engines but that's probably a plan for autumn 2011 into 2012.
If i'd realised that this auto transmission was an option at the time when the project was started I think that it would have been a single engine mounted in the rear rather than 2 engines although a reliable 500hp+ from one of these engines isn't an easy task where getting a reliable 300-350bhp is relatively simple and reliable.
I sold the GTR just over a year ago and still miss it quite a bit.
Thanks,
Mike
Amazing work!
Would love to see that doing some awd drifts in boost.
just how the hell do you run both trans?
is one set up to be like a 'master' and the other a slave? or are both balls to the walls?
Anything worth doing is worth over doing.
Both the trans take the throttle position\load readings from the front engine (as it's never quite a perfect match between front and rear engine throttle position\load due to throttle cable stretch) and running it that way the engines shift at the same time.
Great project I'd love to see more.
Now that is cool as hell would love to see videos of it.
ok i just seen videos of it LOL... that is sweet as hell man... great project...
Hi All,
A quick update after a racing weekend.
Ran initially without the NOS to see if I had fixed the speed sensor problem and it ran consistent 12.5's @ 107mph then went for 50hp of NOS and bought that down to 11.76s @ 115mph so a very good weekend
Had been running my accelerometer on a slightly slower previous run (11.90s) and it did 0-60mph in 3.3s and 100mph in 8.5s.
Thought I had broken the transmission on the last run of the day but luckily it was just a flexplate bolt had worked slightly loose and was just touching the block making a terrible noise
Going to try 75hp NOS at the next event just not sure if the stock 4t40 transmission will handle that much torque as I don't have any progressive controller so it's like adding an extra 170lb of torque off the line (prob about 300lb\ft overall).
The video of the 11.76 run will be on my website in a few hours.
Cheers,
Mike
oh my GOD that is freaking AWESOME!
i gotta give props where props are do. that thing comes out of the hole like nobody's business! what the hell kind of 60 ft's are you geting? 1.6's?!!?
one of the neatest cars i have ever seen here in other cars, hands down. you sir have one hell of a setup.

180hp in 1989 or 145hp in 2002, you decide. >
Hiya,
Haven't quite got the 60ft's down in the 1.6s yet but it's not far off now at 1.76s (on the vid clip it was a 1.84s). Not reached the limit of the grip yet so I think with the extra NOS it should just get into the 1.6's if it doesn't spin up. Only using normal road tyres at the moment so can add the cut slicks or drag radials later once I reach the limit.
Cheers,
Mike
Very impressive but PLEASE do me a favor and from her on out call it Nitrous
NOS just hurts my head haha. and is a brand not the gas
one hell of a car for sure!!!!
amazing 1/4 time considering the complexity of the whole setup... so do you double the miles per gallon?
or is it an average of the two which would be the same as what one of the motors get lol
congrats on the amazing build.

holy @!#$ that's awesome. i didn't read much on the web page, but did you do all/most of the work yourself?
Check out my build thread!
Hi,
The fuel economy isn't too bad really, I can run on just the front engine for cruising to shows and race meets etc and it will get near 50mpg on a good run (that's prob about 45mpg for a US gallon as I think the UK gallon is larger). When running 2 engines it will get about 40mpg (prob 37mpg US) as you use a lot less throttle to maintain speed\accelerate.
I've done prob 99% of the custom work myself (obviously some crucial parts like the ECU's and TCU's were off the shelf aftermarket items) the only items which had to be custom made by an engineering company was the driveshafts.
Thanks,
Mike
