TRD conversion on 98 sunfire USDM
Saturday, September 01, 2007 5:36 PM
Gentlemen and ladies,

Against probably my better judgment (and the tenacity of my new wife), I am attempting to engage into this new j-body modification era. I have owned five different eclipse (DSM) vehicles and have extensively modified them. Some have been wrecked, others parted out, and the last went out the door because the wife was getting tired of paying for new parts. Yet, ironically, she has now caught the modification bug and wants me to "work" on her 1998 pontiac sunfire gt in purple color (ugh...).
I have been doing some research on the 98 toyota cavalier that appeals to my JDM desires and wanted to know if anyone knows where to locate the stock TRD front bumper, side skirts, and rear fascia. I also would be interested in locating the TRD stock steering wheel. It is my understanding that the trunk configurations from the sunfire to the cavalier are not direct swap capable. Is this true? I appreciate any and all feedback that I can get on this topic. Thanks in advance.

you can get a replica TRD front bumper and sideskirts from gravanatuning.com. for the Toyota steering wheel, you'll need to contact street-line.net or search the forums for the part number and you can order it from GM.

Cavalier and sunfire coupe trunks are completely different and are not interchangeable.

Another thing on the differences, but you will not be able to swap the TRD body pieces onto the Sunfire (with the exception of the side skirts) without completely cutting them up, because the Sunfire front and Rear bumpers are fit completely differently to the car due to their different designs.

Congrats on the wife getting the "bug" though. LOL. It makes things a little easier. My wife actually wants to build a Sunfire now as well, but knows that we can't have two projects going, so now she wants to see me finish mine ASAP so we can move on to hers.

to do the fronts you will have to do the conversion on the front end to a cav, and if you want an update on the back end you can switch over to the 03+ sunbfire rear, just change the fillerpanel, reverse lights, tail lights and bumper. that is the only thing you can really do to the rear of the car. also the tiburon wing looks pretty sweet on there

the tib spoiler only works well on there with EXTENSIVE work to get it to align and fit proper.

Sounds like you are going to try to do what I'm doing to my project car, aka TRD Cav Fire. I've kinda had it on the back burner for a good while, but I've got so much crap from the locals I'm about to dive back into the car, but I'm tryin' to switch jobs to no only have the money for the project but time also since I'm hoping to go from 2 jobs down to 1 job. I thought I would point out a few things you are missing. First like others have said the rear end is not going to be able to be swamped to a Cavalier no if ands or buts about it. It would be cheaper in the long run to just get a Cavalier I would suggest you buy a Cavalier and go from there if you really want the full look. Cause really there is no nice rear that goes with Toyota kit for a Sunfire in my mind. I should know due to that I'm making my own instead. Next thing I wanted to say is that TRD never made a rear it is just the front and sides. Also I can tell you that the skirts are not really going to fit either cause of the rear 1/4 is just a little to different for a perfect fit. It is close, but I'm not using the vent on my car due to other reasons. They will have to be cut in half and molding together adding like 1/4" to make them fit right. Otherwise your front fender is going to be pushed into door pulling it so tight. For the last thing TRD never made a wheel only Toyota made the wheel. I think I got the sums up everything...

Actually, I was attempting to find a clean kit that looks as if it should have been there from the factory in the first place. I don't mind working with fibreglass (used to work in a body shop). What is the forums opinion on this idea...taking the TRD style front bumper and molding it to the sunfire upper stock bumper to keep the sunfire headlights (and for something original)? I agree that there isn't any decent rear bumper for the sunfire...most of them are far too aggressive (remember the combat fad a few years back?).

I tried to do some research on street-line, but to be frank, their website could use some extensive work.

LOL... I noticed that you have a purple car as well. Let me put it this way. SHE doesn't even like the purple on the car...if you can even call it that anymore. Between all the bald spots and scratches, it is far past due for some new paint. We are currently working on negotiating with a body shop locally to mix a dark navy blue and a silver pearl for a complete color change.

Sounds like an interesting idea. Original is always good. Post some pics of progress if you do it.

The color you're thinking sounds cool, too.
