Love VS. Respect
Tuesday, February 22, 2005 6:51 AM on j-body.org
I took a class on family issues, and we were discussing marriage and love...well our teacher said that she would rather have someone respect her than love her. I finally came to a point in my life where I understand what she is saying.

Question is, if you were/are in a relationship, would rather have your partner love you or respect you and why? Please dont say both, I want to know which one means more.

Thank you.

Love is when you lick your own jism of the bitches face... Respect is when you pull it out and nut in her ass so she doesnt get pregnant.

I go with respect.

my question to you, steph....

How can you love WITHOUT respect? isn't that just lust or infatuation?

Keeper, I didnt say that was me or how i am with people...anyone who knows me well knows that i am giving in both departments, I am the type of person who cannot hurt someone else, and if i unintentionally do then I feel horrible...to the point where I have let others take advantage

but to answer your question: It can be that or it could be that a person is too selfish and self-centered that they love someone with all their heart but dont know how to treat them

You're right. Domestic abuse is like this. You can love someone, but obviously not respect them enough to not beat them, or to trust them, etc.

So from that standpoint, I understand, totally. To answer your question, I'd go with your teacher.

But for me personally, I'll expand the question. Of course, I'd want both. But if I was asked to settle for one or the other, I'd choose neither. I'd keep looking. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't..... and THAT'S the real problem.

That's a really tough question. I believe that you must love AND respect in a relationship... and I honestly don't think I could choose between the two.

Being respected is always a good thing... but I'd want that person to love me too... otherwise how can it be a true relationship??

I think a successful relationship must have the following things:
1. Love
2. Respect
3. Honesty
4. Trust
5. The ability to compromise
6. Compassion and Understanding

Without those things I don't personally consider it a relationship to begin with... mainly because I feel that those things must be present. Although there are relationships where one or both of the parties don't fully respect the other, or arn't honest or trusting of the other person... etc., but how can you have a relationship without love?

See, steph/agustin...Your example is not love, It's need/obsession.

To me, you can't have love without respect or it's simply not love--it makes it lust/obsession/infatuation/unnarutal need.

From where i sthat, it has to be love because to me love cannot exist without respect there in the first place.

And i didn't say that you were like that, steph...

And i will agree with you on the proble, agustin...people settle too much and believe that they are OWED someone to love rather than earning the right to be loved. As such, they settle in a situation where it's not love, and therein lies the problem.

Why do you think I started this? I needed to know something for me personally...

I'm not sure, steph...my mind-reading skills are infantile at best. But you ask my opinion and i gave you how i feel--without respect there is no love.

After all, i start posts because i'm throughly concerned, or just for the hell of it

Love has my vote as well. There is no love without respect, truth, honesty, therefore trust, etc etc etc.. Love is all of those things and more, in one neat little package... That can explode like an a-bomb.. That's why its also difficult, involving comprimise etc, etc,etc..

Actually, I would argue that you can respect someone without loving them. On the other hand, I would agree with everyone else and say that you cannot truly love someone without respecting them.

For example, I respect my boss at work for various reasons, but I would definitely not go so far as to say that I love her.

But... regarding the three people in this world that I truly love: my mom, my brother, and my boyfriend; I respect all of them, and treat them accordingly.

Love seems to be something harder to show to someone than respect. You can dislike somebody and still respect them. What good does that do? I think if you are showing love in a caring way to someone, they see that you respect them. They go together I believe if love comes first.

Love is emotional state.

Respect is earned.

Two do not come together at the beginning, and the harder one is respect.

For love, you don`t have to have respect - it can be completely irrational., which is not a good situation.

The other thing about the respect is that it is not completely dependant on othe person - it also depends on both of your upbringings and how selfisih you are as a person. It is a very complex thing.

You can see love on every corner. Respect not so often. Both - very rare, but not that hard to achieve... just open your eyes, and think!

i would have to agree that love and respect go hand in hand...
you can say you love someone, but thats doesnt mean you do.... imo, if you love someone you wouldnt abuse them in the first place. saying it isnt doing it!
my definition of love, although not complete because its hard to really define it... however, respect is def. a must in my book!
