Am I the only person that think they are limiting the wrong thing? There are many times when I want to answer someone's question and i decide not to because I only get 100 posts for the month.
I get that they are trying to get people to buy the premium account, even though this is the only forum I have heard of charging for a better membership because all the other forums get enough money from ads/vendors to not charge the users and to support the site and have a better forum script running (vBulletin).....BUT all i just think that the wrong thing is being limited...
Believe me, I am not complaining about the intelligence of the people or topics on the site, I dont use JBO for its awesome forum script and its awesome capabilities, i use it because the users are damn smart and always have the answers to my questions!!!!
SO.... what im trying to say is.... don't you guys think that the amount of new threads that are created monthly is what should be limited? Rather then posts made? I think this would increase the amount of people willing to post help on topics they might have some input on, limit the amount of newbish threads started, and force them to actually search because they CANT post! lol.... just a thought...
anyone feel the same way?

Is $1.66/month really to much to ask for a site you so love?

they need to dis-allow noobs to post for a month, and everytime they log in. a big window should pop up in big bold letters.... "SEARCH before posting"
so that when the time comes that they are allowed to post...they will have that in the back of their mind...to search

Really because alot of the other forums I am on, offer a premium type membership, and unlike here where people will just razz you a little for not being preimum, other forums will down right ignor you untill you join up. And im not talking little forums that dont make any money in Ad's.
I just dont see how 2 dollars a month is two much to ask? Just pay it or wait till the next month.
unless moderators are paid, then upkeep should be the cost of the hosting monthly.... my monthly hosting is 6.99 a month, and im hosting multiple sites that i have developed through my web development business....
i completely agree with you about 20 dollars a year being a VERY VERY ignorable expense, but also an unnessacary one....

i have to disagree with you here, i think newbs should be able post, but not be able to start new threads... this way they will HAVE to search and probably find the answer they are looking for on the way down to post, lol.... like they should have done in the first place.... bans should be on starting new threads!!! who is dave? jbo's webmaster? im sure he will figure something out... this is just something i have always wondered about and i have 36 posts left this month so i decided to go for it now since ima be running out anyways....

i know obviously dave pays more then me...
jbo gets no money from ad's? vendors? group purchase setup? ect?
The problem is not that it costs money at all... the problem is that you are restricting peoples ability to help others unless they pay for it... helping others should be free...
the way it is setup now, i could stop answering anyones questions and ask 100 questions a month, thats my point. its not about the money
I was thinking 10 new threads a month, and unlimited replies.... that would make more sense, but maybe im wrong...
i have no idea how much it costs to run this site, maybe 20 dollars is nesscary, but i just think you are limiting the wrong aspect

Dave spends quadruple digits for this site, dedicated hosting, redundant servers, data center, bandwidth, 24hr access to his (yes HIS, not the datacenters) servers.
The moderators are NOT compensated in ANY way for what we do. Dave barely breaks even (and sometimes ends up with out-of-pocket).
Premium membership was designed to give added features to those who use up the most bandwidth. If you need to post more, you are using more bandwidth, and should have to pay for it. The price is MORE than fair, I remember when it was twice what it is now.
This site can not be run off those $20/mo hosting services, it would puke and die. If you want more, pay for it, why are you complaining about something that is free to you anyway?

Yeah you pay 6.99 a month for basic hosting. Dave pays for a much larger site and on top of that he has other costs besides hosting as well as all the time spent updating the site, and keeping it functional. I really dont belive dave is making Bank off this site.

Hmm good idea. Rookies(i dont like the term noobs) shouldnt b able to start new posts. I see alot of other forums on that. One of the linux sites i visit makes you wait 10 days before you can post anything. There for encouring people to search around the site a little. And then they cant post in OT type forums untill they have made a significant amount of vaild posts in other forums. And i actually iv seen the Pop up box on some sites telling you to search first. Thats not a bad idea for rookies that havnt been around long
Oh and Dave is GOD...ok not really, but he thinks so sometimes lol

Do you really need examples of other forums offering preimum. One of the biggest, if not the biggest jeep site offers it. (Google it) And if you dont become a paying member, the other members will harrass you or ignore your posts untill you become preimium, and its not even as good as JBO.
If you really need "proof" then youll have to wait untill i have time to go home and pull the URL's
Another thing i saw, was one site, had a script running that would search other posts for things like URL's and a certain nuber of key words and then warn you that it may have been posted before with a link. I cant remeber the site name but it doesnt mater because they shut it down before i left.
I think that there are enough premium people on this site capable of answering everybody's questions that it doesn't really matter.

Seriously.. the 20 some dollars i paid to be preme for a year prolly has saved me more in taking it somewhere when i have a problem cuz i dont know whats wrong or how to fix it.. So ill spend 20 bucks to help support JBO to help me out..
I used to think it was worthless but after i did it im all for it.. im already over 100 posts.. and its only 11 days in..Not to mention going into AG or something and reading most the posts is just hilarious.. plus i never realized how good being able to post more than one classified makes things easier too.. There are alot of lil things that u dont think are worth it but when u on the other side u wonder how u lived without..
Plus is there still the AD-bot thing for the non premes? i hated that dang thing..

everyone that has responded is a premium member! lol... i was going up looking for a non premium, and i thought i found one, and then it was me!
, lol
it takes to long to quote others comments so ima just talk about each post...
10 day limit before you are allowed to post is a good idea... also the link generator based on what you typed to warn of pre existing post is a good idea, but sounds like a lot of overhead....
ok, so the site is expensive and the 20 dollars helps offset that... makes sense...
but does anyone think that the amount of new threads you start should be what is limited?
I am not cheap.... i have been a member for a long time, but for the majority of the time i have not used the site as much as i have started to recently... i am not going to pay to have 1 or 2 posts a month.... that should make sense tooo... BUT like a month or two ago i decided to turbo my car, and now that my car is turbo'ed i have a huge need for the information on this site and the resources like shifted, and the other people that seem to know everything, and its the 11th of the month and i have 30 posts left!! lol... i am not going to pay for something i dont need, but now that i need it, and the post limit is approaching i am going to need to buy the premium.... which is why i started the post... because i was wondering about a few things, because it was about 2 years ago when i signed up (i think, maybe 2.5 years) and we are running the same script as we did back then
My main concern was the limit... Not the money... I just think that if dave limits new threads and not posts then "Rookies" will search more, and non premium members will be able to answer questions they know the answer to with out having to pay money to do so.... because it is possible for a non premium member to know something a premium member doesnt . . . .

There's no best way to make everyone happy. Some people will get screwed the way it is and some people would get screwed the way you want to do it. The current way has worked for years and prob will for some more years to come.
Yeah it does suck only 100 post a month. I also watch how much I post.

ive dished out the perm for along time , i know what dave pays for the site , and it aint 6.99
hell our small local site costs alot more than 6.99 a month
honestly , i think these little bitchfest posts should own the poster a ban for a week , since they are a complete waste of band width
i do agree that newbies shouldnt be allowed to start a post out side of the newbie fourm , in attempts to get them to search for answers
but alot of people not just newbies ask questions already been asked , some even on the 1st page
i think porn shouldnt be limited to ag. i myself need it, and i cant afford teh extra cash.

I don't like giving out hard numbers, but in this case I think I will. Because of a partnership with another company, we pay almost half of what we should be paying for the kind of colocation services we get. In 2005 it cost over $14,000USD to keep everything running. It should have been a lot more, but like I said, we are lucky to have this partnership. That being said, the total for 2006 will be significantly higher. There was a rather expensive server upgrade at the beginning of this year. We are also doing more traffic now then last year, which is costing more money. I still need $900 to complete the server upgrade that I indended. I have yet to see that much money all in one shot since it comes in one way and right back out the other.
At this time premium membership accounts for a little less then half of the income. As such though, it is extremely important in paying the bills. Any less then what is coming in now and I would be in the red, where I was for probably 3 years. I estimate that I have paid out of my own pocket somewhere in the range of $30,000USD over the years. Even if I do make a couple bucks now, which from time to time I do, it will never even make a dent in how much I have spent over the years.
But that isn't the point of this post, I think. Lets get down to the real subject, premium membership.
I don't like the 100 post limit either. The problem with changing it now is that it is pretty much the only incentive some people have for paying for premium. If it wasn't for that, less money would be coming in, and I can't afford it. In the past I could afford to be in the red because I didn't have as many personal expenses.
I am working on some new things that I hope will give people far more reason to be premium then just unlimited posts. If it works out, you can expect the post limit to be changing.
And as for the comments about other sites not having premium membership, trust me, of the sites that have such a thing, this one is near the bottom end as far as cost. I see forums out there that literally charge for every little thing - posts, PMs, uploading, etc.
