So I was walking up to my car today, outside the local hockey arena, and I see some girl go up to my car door, use a key, and open the door. I was about 10 feet away at this point, so I say "Uh, can I help you with something?" She looked all startled and says "um, no....". "yeah, thats my car.....". She looks all confused and says "no its not", "um, yeah it is, thats my licence plate, and thats my parking pass hanging there....."
Turns out her car was one row over. Also a red 97 sunfire.... How common is it for 2 cars to have the same key? lol. I'm glad I was there before she drove off....
less common than one would think, really.

"Youth in Asia"...I don't see anything wrong with that.
i forget how many keys there were but i have never found another for my car at all. i wanna say like 8-10 cuts?
I thought cavis only had 6 keys... either way its not many
i used to be able to start my mother in laws cavi with my keys. i was hoping for that when i picked up the sunfire, so i only had to carry one key for both cars. no dice though.

SO EVERYTHING!
the lock cylinder for the doors is far less sensative than the ignition. the fact that she could open your door does not mean she could have started your car. her key is close enough to yours that it can unlock it, but is slightly different enough that she probably couldn't have started it.
my key can unlock my buddy's cavalier, but can't start it.
sucks if you have a lot of expensive stuff in your car, that someone can get inside simply by having a similar key.

very true. my key can open my buddys sisters cav but wont start it. would come in handy though if i wanted to steal the rksport touring wing.
A tinit guy at the dealer I worked at tinted the wrong car. Same colour, same options and apparently the same door key.
I don't thingk anyone will ever find a key that also works in the ignition.
Never heard of that before.... though my Subaru, GM and some Chrylser keyless entry systems also work on my car.

my 01' chevy venture key opens my and my dads cav, but none of the keys work in other ignitions.
Back when I had my 89 sunbird.. I could open the door locks using any key on my key ring..... both passenger and drivers side.... any key would work
i never use my key to open the door. keyless entry FTW.
There's 10 cuts to most 95~05'ish GM keys... including the J-body. IDK much about key codes... but if you take your VIN to a GM dealer, they can search your VIN and find the right code... it's in the format SxxxK, where the xxx = a three digit number. At least, mine starts with S and ends with K. Dunno if they're all like that. But there's 10 cuts, each between a 1 and a 4 deep. So, your key cutting code would be something like 4312421232. And that specific cut would correspond to a key code... they program the code into the key cutter, insert a blank key... blammo, you gotta new key. Of course.. there's only so many codes.. so if you go around and try cars, it'll open a whole bunch... not just J-cars, but other similar GM's.
Thing is... it might be close enough to open the door or trunk.... but not even turn the ignition. And even if it's close enough to turn the ignition, the resistance in the key might be different enough from your key, that Passlock prevents it from actually starting the car.
When I did my L67 swap... I used the Passkey 3 theft deterrent stuff from the Park Ave and put it into the car... then I got some PK3 key blanks from Ebay, took them to the dealer and had them cut to my key code.... now I have PK3 protection in my Cavalier... so even if you had the right key code, and had a key cut for it... you couldn't steal it, because it wouldn't be a PK3 key, and it wouldn't be programmed to my car... so my car would never start... (I have a hard enough time starting it some days with the RIGHT key... so...)

I remember a few years back someone went into a dealership lot and started opening up all the doors to vehicles they could open up. It was quite funny but scary at the same time.
It is kindo of scary, the keys for my car will only open my gf's sunfires glove box, but her keys can open her friends sunfires doors. It is really scary considering someone can walk down the road and unlock the door to your car.
I believe the Sunfire glove box can be opened by any j-body key.
i kinda laughed when i see this post . my 97z key would unlock the doors and start a stock 97 cavalier that a friend had but wouldn't open the trunk. her key would open my trunk and doors but wouldn't start my car. i looked at her and laughed and said "i guess that means i can borrow you car when ever i want". lol
i've never tried another j-body...
i do know that my gf's kia sportage key will unlock and start my buddies festiva though.

Yeah, that's how the GM Semi Truck & Trailor carrying the Orange Turbo Cavalier & Blue Supercharged Sunfire GT got stolen.
I was working on my friend's 2004 Sunfire just after she got it, and inadvertently used my key to open the trunk. Once I realized what I had done, I then compared our keys - identical. I then proceeded to open her car and drive it with my key. Her key also works in my car.
I too would love to know how many other people out there have keys for my car. Mine is a 2002.

One day I went downtomn to pickup a new laptop and my Alpine system. I had like 2800$ stuff in the car and locked myself outside of the car (idiot)... Just before I call my roadside assistance a guy with a 96 or 97 Sunfire asked me if I was locked outside my car. I told him yes.
He took his key and unlocked my door. I was like ---->
. Hopped in the car and went right back home with my stuff.
