Trouble getting a Cobalt SS test drive
Friday, April 22, 2005 1:25 PM
Are there ANY dealerships around who are willing to let you drive this thing? I'm not about to put down a deposit just to wait in line to drive it. I've tried Howson, and Chev of Thornhill, (the 2 closest dealers to me) and I can't catch a break. The guy at Howson said he'd call me when the next one came in.

I'm running into the same problem with the Ion Red Line also.

Do people honestly buy cars like this without driving them? I'd understand if it was a collectible, like a '69 Camaro or something, but let's be real. It's a new entry-level compact car.

I test drove a Yellow SS at Queenston Chev in Hamilton...it wasn't for sale though, it was already purchased by someone.

It's not an entry level car.

No one around here has a SS... So I dunno what you mean about hassles.. I am waiting for them to get one in so I can place my order.. My decision is between in a Colorado and a Cobalt SS.. Probably go with the SS

Sorry, I think I'm communicating the wrong message.

It's not that I'm getting hassled. I'm just venting a bit that there isn't one on the lot for me take for a test drive. I'm just not about to put down a deposit to wait to test drive one, that's my beef.

Melanie at North York Chev Olds seemed to have an "I don't care" attitude. The guy at Howson was at least willing to put me on a wait list.

Well if they don't have one, you obviously can't test drive one.

I think a big issue is that many of the ones coming in are already pre-sold so even when they get them, they can't use them for test drives. I'd be pissed if a car I bought was being test driven by someone else after I'd already bought it!

And yes... people often buy cars like this without test driving them.

Well I am getting tired of waiting.. I have read lots of reviews from different sites (anything from magazines and such to personal opionons).. I am going to go ahead and probably order mine next Saturday or Monday... I am going to order a 2006 Yellow SS (hopefully the LSD will be availble when I order a 2006 model)....

I was kind of hoping the Sunroof would be getting put in for free like they say.. Also I heard that they don't put the heated seats in it, that you pay $500 at the dealer.. Well I would be a little pissed if that is true.. Considering the brochures say they come with heated seats...

Well, unless you wait until after june, you are ordering an '05 model. And ordering then will cause you to wait much much longer.
Heated seats???? where the hell did you read that?..I never read that in my order slip.

And yes, some ppl buy cars without test driving them, I test drove a Cobalt LT and loved it. So I ordered an SS a few weeks later (Last Week).
Usual wait times are 8-10 weeks, and yes, all cars being shipped are infact sold, and if anyone test drives my car I'll have a fit. I sat in an SS being shipped to a customer, already sold and i'm sure he was wating at the dealership for it to arrive. as i Will.

umm, I bought my cavalier before it was shipped to Nurse, and I wasn't even allowed to test drive it, when it got there, Once they put sold on the piece of paper, nobody is allowed to drive them for insurance reasons, but then again, some dealerships probably don't care, if it will make them a future sale. I know Nurse in Whitby is very good with things though. But they told me they won't have an SS in till after summer, but maybe that guy was new and didn't know much.

That exact situation happened to me. I was working out of town about 3 hrs away, and I got a call that my car had arrived. So I decided to make the trek back, b/c I was so excited, and by the time I arrived, everyone and their dog had taken my car for a boot around town. Needless to say, I had to wait for another car to come in 2 months later.

Needless to say, my dealership doesnt say hym nor ha, when I bring my car in for service....even though it might have some mods

P.S. It wasn't a Cobalt SS.

People should keep an eye on the total mileage if you're purchasing the car off the lot. Make sure the mileage does not go over the PDI (I believe it is 5-7km's). Also, if it needs to go out for service for rust proofing, you can measure the distance like I did, and also stipulate who drives the car there and back. If the salesperson really wants your sale, they'll do anything you want

^^I didn't know there should be more than 5-7km on it Scott. When I bought my Sunfire new, it had over 100km on it. 112 I think....

Re: Trouble getting a Cobalt SS test drive

Well it would depend on how you bought it, right?

My car was pre-purchased (deposit in May 2003, delivery date Oct 2003 ), so it came right off the truck, sat in the parking lot, and I told them if anyone laid a hand on it this time, the deal is off. So when I got it, it had 7km's on it.

I mean, Im just one of those ppl who is extremely cautious, so even if your car had >7km's, there is no true way to tell if the car was driven hard for test drives. For a Cobalt SS, I'd lean more towards that it was driven hard just because the power is one of the selling features, and that is what everyone wants to feel (how powerful it is).

One of the reasons why your car has 100km's might be that they had to drive it from another dealer to the dealership you bought your car from. I have a friend's car like that. So all that being said, I wouldnt worry alot about it. But if you do purchase a car in the future and you suspect that ppl have been taking it for a joyride, then i would definitely look at the mileage on the car, and inquire about where it has travelled.

With respect to the exact PDI info, you're best off to talk to Bill (lilblacktwofour) or Darren (Slammed17's), as they are mechanics and would have better info than I would. My info is based on what I have been told by my dealer. So I would not take it as 100% fact.

Acutally I am ordering mine tomorrow (or getting one from a Dealership in the area that has one on the way).. So the comment about the ones on the trucks already sold.. Not 100% true since this yellow one coming is just going to the dealership.. The only way it is sold is if I go give them a deposit soon.. Which I might do that instead of having to order one and waiting.. This one is on the way already and if I deposit it they can get it rush delivered apparently..

The heated seats is right off the GM website.. Now my buddy just picked one up from the lot at a dealer in Durham.. And it doesn't have heated seats but the site says and I quote "Reclining front bucket seats with leather-appointed heated seating surfaces, vertical adjusting head restraints and driver-side lumbar and height adjusters (requires 7-speaker premium enhanced sound system on LS model; includes two-tone leather-appointed seating surfaces on SS model)"

Here is the link http://www.gmcanada.com/english/vehicles/2005/chevrolet/cobalt/coba_opti.html

But his car doesn't come with it.. I don't know why they have it on the options package when you can get it.. I think it's kind of stupid to have it down on the list but not have it in the acutal car.. And it says it's a standard option.. Not optional...

The only reason I would like to wait for a '06 model is because they are coming out with the LSD and Racaro seats.. But I don't know if it's worth the wait to be honest.. The car is quick enough.. The seats are nice enough.. And the LSD really only gives more traction, which is really only better for start offs..

Well just ordered my Cobalt.. Will be here sometime in June.. Rally Yellow with Sunroof.. So when you see a yellow SS in Whitby.. Probably is going to be me.. I was informed by the Dealer that Ontario is only alloted 136 of them.. So there isn't going to be to many 2005 Model's moving around..
Re: Trouble getting a Cobalt SS test drive

Well, update:

The guy from Don Howson on Sheppard called me Saturday morning, and they had one come in on Friday. So I took it out Saturday morning.

I liked it. The stereo was great, the engine was great, the suspension was great. I wa soverall quite impressed with the car. Making it a serious consideration now.

I'm not going to get this one, because I'm willing to wait to order it the way I want it, (this one was black, I want blue). Plus, I decided that in the first 2 minutes of the test drive, that I didn't want to buy from this guy. He didn't know anything about the car. He called the SC a turbo. And the only things he could tell me about the car were things that you could see, like he was making it up on the spot. I just didn't like him.

I drove a Mazda 3 GT later that afternoon. I liked the people at Mazda Of Toronto on Yonge, (Formerly Avante Mazda) that dealership much better.

I'm down to the 3 GT & the SS.

FXGTZ:
Thats very interesting....you are the first person to mention it to me, I have the build sheet and the options list there is no word of it. So I'd tend to believe that.

I ordered mine a month ago and as an update from the dealer....there is no update. They are crazy backordered...everyone. if you can get one on the spot get it. the build out for '05 is weeks away (early june) and after all the orders are in they will start taking orders for '06's.

I have a long wait ahead and I'm getting impatient...very impatient.
Don't believe any dealers or sales people that tell you you can get it quick....they either had it on the way or are lying..
