I'm just curious as to whether anyone here has bought a modified car.
I switched insurance companies and now nobody except Facility will insure my Sunfire, and they will not insure it for comprehensive only.
Has anyone else run into issues with no insurance companies these days wanting to touch modified cars?
What did you do?
in my experience I never told them. When mine was broken into twice the adjuster came out, took copies of the receipts of parts added and I was compensated for those damaged parts after market or not.

When you sign up initially here, they'll do an inspection to ensure that the car you're insuring exists and doesn't have any prior damage.
They'll know right then that it's modified, unless it's really subtle stuff.
^^^ this is true....I want to buy a SUpra or 350Z and the three l'm looking at are already modded in some way or another....
WTF can you do.....
I'm thinking NOTHING...!!!
I'm with Wawanesa insurance. They did not ask for my car to be inspected. I think the smaller companies don't bother. The larger ones like RBC, TD etc will. Have you tried www.insurancehotline.com? That is who I got my rate from and they didn't check the car.

^^^ Me too. Yeah went through this earlier this year when Certas dropped me once they heard the car had been modded. I went through a complete list and they ended up giving me notice. Just as well as they would have disallowed a claim if they found out otherwise. I shopped it to several brokers and ended up with Wawanesa. I offered to let them inspect the car etc... but they did not bother. Just gave my representative in Sudbury the low down. Now, my engine mods are limited to intake and exterior cosmetics. Any true "performance mods" would have caused them to reject me. Hope this helps.

Pretty much what I'd say to do if you think you could get away with it. Also, if you've got the stock parts, swap them back in, get it inspected, then reinstall time.
The funny thing is that I don't even want to drive it right now. I only want comprehensive coverage on it while it's stored.
There's no point in doing this if I'm not going to disclose everything.
I just find it discouraging that while the law says we need insurance, and my car is completely legal, nobody will touch it. How is that right?
its not fair or right in anyway Weasel, funny how @!#$ that this happens
well...not Canada, but i use Geico in the US and I have i think $15,000 of extra coverage on alot of my aftermarket stuff....and they even insutred my aftermarket paint. i told them the cost of the paint and labor, and they insured that amount. granted i obviously need to produce receipts for these things if anything ever happens, but they still insured it all......my paint, kit, rims, airbags, system, etc etc.
and for the 15k extra coverage, i jacked my premium a wopping $110 a year. definately worth it iIMO
Im with Bel-Air Direct.....I was going to try State Farm where my Cav is but they told me I would have to go through Facility because they wont insure a modified car....
Basically if you have a modded car and hide that from the insurance company you could get into an accident and they can walk away.....
With Bel-Air Direct I told them about the mods and the value of them....Sometime within the first month of your insurance with them they require you to go to a body shop to get pictures taken of all the mods and get a little form filled out....The body shop will then send this info to Bel-Air and thats the last you'll hear of it.......They do this for 2 obvious reasons....1) So you can't say you have $4,000 rims and then a couple months later say they got stolen when infact you didnt have any....And 2) So that you cant insure things on your car like a body kit and then a while later tell them its busted when it was actually busted all along....
From my experience Bel-Air is really good to deal with.....
bel air gives great quotes.
My Cav
I give up...
i'm buying a VW those people love trees, so they should love eachother too... "Andy"
Maybe I'll give them a call then.
I wonder if one of my problems is that my car was appraised for over $17k when I don't figure it's worth even half that.
Did u try Direct Protect Group? under Co-operators. They knows I have modified cars. They will cover the amount I have already invested into my cars.
As what Eazy have mentioned... I have no idea about receipts to show a proof if anything ever happens. Cuz I dont have any! what do you guys suggest me to do about that? I guess I should ask them about that too..
Im trying to sell a modified car! hahah
Id say give State Farm a call. The had no problem with my Cavalier, although they didn't inspect it. The new car I have no troubles with either. Its hot heavily modified, but they are covering everything on it as long as I have recipts if something happens.
I remember back in the day companies used to only cover up to $1500, nothing more. I asked about that as well, seeing as my wheels are worth a lot more then that, and they said its fine, as long as the modifications dont effect the suspension. Engine, cosmetic, rims and tires are all fine.
If you want Kev, PM me I'll give you my brokers name and number

im also with bel air. when siging up i had to go get my car inspected at a local shop they use.
i showed up, he took a picture, recorded the mileage, and i left.
bel-air has been really good to me so far. they said they just wanted to make sure the car wasnt being used for "racing". i laughed and told him if it was it would be a manual, not an auto.
anyways. i had a ticket and an accident drop off of my insurance this renewal, but a new ticket went on. my insurrance stll dropped a bit from what it was before.
give them a call or do an online quote. online they will quote some of the competition as well.
also, the best advice i can give you is to go to a competant insurance broker. a broker ( a good one atleast) will listen to you and do his best to get you the best rate and/or policey that suiuts your needs. i think thats your best route.

This is generally the key. They don't care about the cosmetic stuff but once you change the suspension or add power, they throw their arms up.
I'm real curious as to what happens when you sell the car. Hopefully the buyer will come here and share the experience.
^^^^ where did you end up with calling Belair.....?
its funny i was shopping around for insurance on my car and thought that i would be honest and tell them about all the modifications
well there like we cant insure a modified car, even tho i just had the damn thing completely certified with no problem
its funny i was telling them and all they cared about was when i said that i had the blower and different brakes, but generally when you have the GM super and you can provide a part number they dont care too much
i am thinking about trying bel air come renewal time or switching brokers
State Farm was one of the leaders screwing modified car drivers.
Be careful, your broker is there to make money. Ignoring the modifications is in his interest. I assure you, the insurance company is interested.
If the broker I'm dealing with gives up, then I'll start looking further.
I just sent her the appraisal yesterday after she gave me a facility rate and said I couldn't insure it only for comp.
I was dropped back in the summer time from Economical for having a body kit and muffler.....lol
I'm not 100% sure, but my girlfriend used to be a Personal Lines insurance broker (she is now in Commercial Lines with a different brokerage). When she was in Personal Lines, she often took pictures and such of cars for records, including a few modified cars. The only one that comes to mind is an SRT-4 with (I think) the Mopar Stage 2 kit. The guy ended up paying a premium not because it was modded (though being an SRT-4 did increase his rate), but because he had a crappy driving record (multiple excessive speed violations).
I'm a fan of a brokerage over a company, so if you haven't gone that route, you might want to look into it.

State Farm is also one on the most expensive auto insurers in Ontario. but on the other side of it State Farm will write-off anything. that could be good or bad depending on how much you want to keep the car.
from what ive seen at work with state farm cars and talking to our state farm adjuster, mufflers and wheels are not really an issue. even body kits and spoilers are usually ok, they just won't be covered if you make a claim. but if you start messing with suspention or drive train they will reject the claim.
this is assuming you did not tell them when you bought the policy and its seen when the aparise the damage.
a big perk to being insured with state farm is they will sell you your car back for next to nothing, they sell them back to you for pennies on the dollar.

My 03 Was is Lowered and has a leather interior like yours Weasel. And I convinced them it was stock during the inspection. have had no problems.
