ABS?
Monday, April 25, 2005 1:13 PM
96 Cavalier-Front end wants to lock up on me. Even when Im only going say 10-15mph, and you can feel it pulsate, and push back on the pedal. I know its not the rotors, nor the pads. I havent done anything to the lines, etc so I dont believe it needs bled. And you can hear that dreaded sound that ABS makes. Damn near rear ended a semi this morning on 79

It honestly sounds like fluid to me. Flush it (not just bleed it).

Let me expand. I think you may have old fluid that has been overheated or you have absorbed too much water. I end up flushing my fluid 3-4 times a year from all the autocrossing. Does the pedal not feel as stiff as usual?

I dont see how it can just be the fluid. For the last year, the car has been great. Just in this last weak it started. Ill try it, but maybe there is something else I could check as well?

Yes the pedal feels the same, it just kicks back a little, and makes that noise like your slide on ice.

your caliper piston may be sticking or your power booster might be messed up.

It would. So unless the light is burnt out or something, you can probably eliminate the ABS system as the culprit.

Generally speaking, problems with the ABS system end up disabling it, not causing it to engage prematurely.

Does it do this on smooth roads or is it happening on gravel, wet roads, or bumpy roads where a wheel could very well be locking up and activating the ABS?

it does it on all roads. It even does when you coming to a stop, going up hill!

Strange. I wonder if you've got a drum seizing up or something. When's the last time you had the drums serviced? Have you had any damage occur lately?
