on the part where the strut bolts onto the strut mount the threads are striped. Can that be fixed with a new thread or am I just screwed
put new threads on or replace the strut
Generally happens when it's not secured properly and ends up with some play in the mount.
I'm not sure if it can be safely rethreaded. Anyone ever done it?
Is the mount damaged as well?

The mount is ok. I was thinking about retreading it but I didnt know if it would be safe or not. Wanted to hear the experts opinions.
It shouldn't hurt to rethread a millimeter two smaller and use an appropriate sized nut for the new diameter.
Thats what I was looking for. Thanks
anyone know what the factory thread size is or what size I should go down to
Your resistry has zero information on what you've got.
If you've got Koni Yellows or something else expensive then it's worth a shot. If you've got some old stock struts or something, just replace them and save yourself the hassle.

What size nut is on there now? I've forgotten what size it is now, been a while since I took my struts off. But after you find which one fits, just go down one size die from there. Check the threading, and if it's still not quite deep enough, go down one more size. Dies are labelled as to size, just like nuts and bolts. If you haven't seen a die before, they look like this:
Easy to use. Should take you all of 10 minutes to rethread it. Worth it, IMO.
I know its a half inch nut but Im not sure about the threads.
it's a 13mm nut, not half inch. Everything is metric on these cars. Metric thread, I believe it's a coarse thread.. there's fine and ultra-fine..
you could use an imperial nut and deliberately cross-thread it...
it'll probably stay on there

whats an imperial nut. Would it be better to put new threads on.
Imperial = SAE sizes. And not everything is metric. There is some SAE. Caliper pins come to mind first, 3/8" Allen.
I believe the struts are all metric though. 7mm coarse thread if I remember correctly.

Ok, you win.
I could have sworn those caliper pins were metric, but I just checked the hex key I use and sure enough, it's a 3/8".
but 99% of the car is metric

Yeah, it 's 13 mm....I stripped a couple threads on my one of my Tokico struts.....Just use some oil and work it slow....
awsome, thanks guys, saved me from having to buy a new agx strut

I think the caliper pins really are metric but a 3/8ths works wonders on them even if it is just a tad too small. I bought a set of allen sockets just for that purpose.
