99 2200 threw a rod. 96 replacement?
Monday, July 02, 2012 6:22 PM
first off hello. new to this forum. ive owned a few 2nd gens and 2 SS S/C cobalts.

i did a search of the forums and what i read seemed promissing, but id like some people just to comfirm.

so my question is.

i bought a 99 sunfire se with the 2200 manual transmission. the motor had thrown a rod. ive tracked down a donor car.

its a 96 Cavalier. base model. its got the 2200 in it. now ive read that in 98 gm made changes to the emissions system and thiers 5 less hp in my 99 then a 96.

before i go ahead and purchase this 96 i would like to know if the motor will be a straight across swap.

not trying to get any performance out of this. im a young father and just need it to commute to and from work.

thank you in advance
Tyler

Yes it is, but y go from 99 2200 motor. To an 96 2.2 LN2 , besides the 99 has no EGR and the 96 does
You will need to swap the ECU as well

That's what I wanna know, hell they go for like $100-$200 around here. Even less if you go to harrys on engine days lol.

Want hub spacers rear disk brackets or trailing arm bushings? Shoot me a PM.

call around because i can get them in ontario a lot cheaper then 700 can get 05 ecos for that amount

also you wont need to change the pcm/ecu for a 96 engine you just need to swap stuff that doesn't match

you can leave the egr on the motor there just wont be a plug for itand it wont function some sensors may be different plugs so if the sensor mounts different change the plug

I am planning on putting a 1995 2.2 into a 1999. I thought that it was a 96 but it must be a 95 as it has no cam sensor. What would be involved to make it work. i am not sure how I would have to modify the injector wiring. The wiring diagrams I have show the same for 95 to 99 but the injector wiring seems to be different. There are only three wires going into the injector harness on the 95. Would the PCM from the 95 work? I was also hoping to use the head from the 99 as it has roller rockers but it appears that the combustion chamber is considerably larger and would drop the compression too much. Any help would be appreciated. This engine is in a circle track stock car so modifications are fairly easy to make.

Thanks
Rick

nope your fawked get the right motor 99 could go into a 95 but not vise versa

2.2 or 2200s are cheap as FAWK people just buy what you need

all the yards here sell any engine no matter the size for a minimum of a few hundred bucks

a 2.2 in the yards here on average are 400 to 500 even over 100k miles

yards are expensive here

i dont know how they remain in business

of course we do buy engines and trannies from them, so i guess that answers my query hmm,,

have no choice really, when a customer needs a good replacement engine then we have to get whats out there, regardless of price almost always

1997 and up are new design 2.2L chevy engines

they changed pretty much everything on these, manifolds, sensors, brackets and accessories, and so on.

pretty much have to swap everything attached to the head and block over

alot of posts started here are just to ask this very same question

super common inquiry here

isnt there a sticky on this posted?

its super easy to tell a 98 up 2.2 from a 97 older one at a quick glance

the valve cover is smooth plain aluminum in 98 up

97 older are the black and flat ribbed style one

very obvious difference at a quick glance

-96 cavalier 2.2 auto 143k miles
