Interior Gauges
Friday, November 18, 2005 10:29 PM
I have tried searching the forum for answers and I know there is a page here that talks about the gauge faces, but i was wondering if anyone could give me some answers on how to wire the new gauge faces to the headlights, so they would come on as the stock ones do, Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Tap into your dimmer switch. I don't know what car you have, but on mine it was the yellow wire for the hot lead, and brown (or black, I think they're both ground wires, it's been way to long...). Then you're set.

why not do it to the wipers?

in a 2000+, it's the grey wire from the dimmer switch.

sorry i forgot to specify year and car, i have an 04 cavy, and which wire goes to the grey wire on the dimmer switch the red or black? or do i hook up the power wire (red) to the grey wire on the dimmer switch and then ground the black one? sorry im not the greatest with wiring, and still tryin to get the hang of it, and one last Q, what do i do with the rest of the wires from the kit?

the red will go to the dimmer and the black will go to a ground bolt somewhere. that should be all the wires, ive never heard of one with more than 2 wires

I got my tracking # today and it says it will probably be Thursday b4 I get it. If you don't have a tracking # send a email to oscar@procarparts.com and he will help you out. Make sure you give him the item #.

got mines today..they look sweet!!.....going to install them tomorrow...hey Matthew, I know what are the other wires you are talking about, those are for the switch (if you are using one) if not, just connect them both together....since you are going to tap it to the dimmer (so it turns on with the headlights)...exactly what im going to do tomorrow...I'll post pics...

What kind of transformer did you guys get? hopefully it's not the one that only turns on when you press the button (even if u have it wired up right).

yeah...installed mine today look great...the only bad thing is...I got the same transformer you got ^^^^ Kay...the one that has 2 wires coming from the gauges to the transformer and 4 coming from the transformer, 2 for ground and power and the other 2 for the on/off switch....had to wire it to the ign fuse cuz the freaking this HAS to work with a switch...couldn't go around it....even if i connect it to the grey wire like you said...but anyways...its good....it turns off when my car turns off...lol

heres a pic (don't look at that switch on the steering wheel columm...that one is for the strobes...lol....the switch that came with the gauges if FLAT very nice to hide..
the picture has a lot better pixels...i dunno why cardomain makes it crappy

on my 03, you had to tap the brown wire to get it to come on with the lights. but i also had a better transformer than the switch on one.

RIP Kasey Burleson, and get well soon Chris Shelly

I finally got mine in. But just scimming thru the instrucions, it says DO NOT USE FACTORY DIMMER SWITCH AS A POWER SORCE- you will blow out your gauges.

WTF. Has anybody heard of that?

Doesn't surprise me. When something is expecting 12v and you give it 3v, you can do some damage.

lol....so what's the best power source you'd recomend.....I heard some ppl say that the brown wire coming from the stock cluster harness can be used also....is this true???

I have no idea. Use a voltmeter to find one that goes hot when the headlights are on.

And turn the dimmer all the way down so you don't get a dimmer wire by accident. You want one that goes right to 12v. With the dimmer all the way down, those wires will be around 3 to 5v.

Check a wiring diagram to guide you. If you don't have one (in a haynes manual or something) then you should get one.

I'll check alldata for a hot wire when the lamps are on.
