Boost Gauge Question
Wednesday, March 22, 2006 5:37 AM
I'm not sure if this should go here or boost but it is in relation to my interior so I'm posting it here.

Basically I have a mechanical boost gauge and I was wondering is it normal that I can hear the pressure inside the cabin when I hit boost? Or is this a sign that I did not tighten the connection enough for the feed line?

I don't know for sure, but I would think you would be able to hear it in the cabin.

Make sure your connection's are tight because with mine I knew with the hose was loose because I could hear it, and when it was on all the way I could not hear it.

What do you mean by that? Are you hearing a hissing sound from the gauge or something? If so, then I'd expect it's not tightened properly.

Are you getting the boost readings you expect to?

when i had a mechanical 1 i never got any odd noises from the gauge

Basically what I hear is that as soon as I enter boost you can hear the hiss of pressure being pushed into the gauge. I only hand tightened the hose to the gauge. If you guys think it is lose then I'll just try to tighten it up some more with a wrench. I'm guessing that the boost amounts I am seeing are right. I'm not really sure. The reason I bought the gauge was to see what kind of boost I am getting. But sure enough every time you can hear it with out any problem. Even over the radio (not at any high volume though).

Hand tight almost certainly isn't enough. Put a wrench on it and give 'er another 1/4 turn or so until it's good and snug.

Wouldn't hurt to put some teflon tape around the threads too before you put it together.

hey econator can you point me to or tell me how I should install a boost gauge for the GM eco charger ?

It's a very simple installation. I chose to use an autometer mechanical boost gauge which shows boost and vacuum.
Like so:
There are really only two things to hook up. The boost/vacuum feed and the light.

Light should be simple enough to figure out, I ran the ground wire to a piece of metal under the dashboard. And the positive wire I tapped into the dimmer switch (if you want to be lazy and just prove it works you could just tap it into the wiper fuse which is enough for an on off test)

Then for the nylon line just run it through the firewall and I tapped into the vacuum line that comes off the FPR and goes to the intake manifold. Just splice it put in the t-connector, use the rubber adapter, and have the nylon line run through the adapter.

To just prove funcionality the installation should take more than maybe 15 minutes. It just depends on how pretty you want it to be which determines the amount of time it takes after that. Also the gauge is completely up to you, as long as it is mechanical it should be an easy install. You can go electronic if you want, I just didn't feel like going through the extra work of installing one. Even though now that I saw the cobalt gauge that has boost and intake temperature in one gauge, that would have been a nice idea, maybe it will be in my future.

thanks a lot !!

With a bit of reading and asking around, I should be able to do understand your post and install it... I'm a total noob for mechanics....

Well this is a noob type of install then because it is extremely easy. The autometer gauges come with everything you need. You can run it with out a light at first if you just want to see boost during the day and worry about the electronics later.

To figure out the feed for your boost/vacuum line it's really easy after your supercharger is install and you pop open the hood you should really only see 2 vacuum hoses with out having to search anywhere. There is one that attaches to the bypass valve and is on the supercharger. Don't use that one, all you'll ever see is vacuum. Go past the supercharger and on the fuel rail you will see your fuel pressure regulator. This has your fuel return line on one side and a vacuum hose on the left side. That vacuum hose will run from the FPR to the intake manifold. This is the one that all you have to do is cut it, and then stick the T connector between the cut. Run the hose from that T connector to your boost gauge and you are done. At idle you should probably see about 20-25 vacuum and if you rev it you should see it do really quick jumps up to 0 psi and back down to 30 as the bypass kicks in.

If you want to run the electronics for the bulb with the most simplistic directions I can possibly give you. Take off the panel for your fuse panel in the inside cabin. Look for the fuse that is used for WIPER, wrap the positive (red usually) line around one terminal and stick the fuse back in. And for the ground there is a screw to the edge of the panel (you will have to pull off the entire panel not just the little window door they give you) and wrap the negative (black) line around the screw and tighten it down. That is a basic setup that will give you power when the car is on, and no power when the car is off.

If you want to hook it up to your dimmer panel, then it will require more tools, like a multi meter, and some luck.

wow thanks again man ! This looks easy enough so I might attempt it pretty soon, just have to find the time to go buy that gauge and some free time. I'll keep you posted on how it went...
