Sweetness: Turbocharged (56k Ouch)
Saturday, July 23, 2005 9:26 AM
Some people know of my car, some people don't. I've been around the .org for 5 years now and it has been a long and troubled road of modifying for me. It seems that every time I take a step forward, the car takes a few steps back...

I've always tried to stay ahead of the game, coming up with new modifications, or trying modifications for the first time for others to learn from. In essence I was the guinea pig for quite a few of them, and I learned hard lessons. (Heavily ported heads + secret cams = no)

I've had one goal with the car. I wanted a car that looked and ran like a mini-firehawk... that might seem like a strange direction to go, but it has worked tremendously in an aesthetic sense....

3 years ago I dug into the motor, determined to be the quickest N/A J-body, and for all intents and purposes at the time (before Karo finished the beast) I had a motor that really had a chance at doing the job, but bogging between gears held me back and it took me a few seasons to diagnose the problem and find out where all my little problems with the motor were......

Last season the car wasn't driven. It needed work done and I was too poor. It spent all summer at Racetech automotive where it had repairs done to the motor due to a leaking cam-tower gasket.

This season, though.... I promised myself it would be different. After spending two years designing a turbo kit, collecting the parts, and taking the bus (yeah that hurt), I finally finished the turbo kit in April 2005, only to run into the usual turbo problems: with great power comes the breaking of weak or worn parts. I blew an ICM, two blazer fuel pumps, one transmission, the list goes on and on...

One thing I was very careful about when I designed this turbo kit: all my stock options are there. A/C, power steering, washer fluid, heater lines, battery in stock location... the goal was to make it look like GM installed the turbo kit, not me. When GM Canada / USA saw the car, they agreed: it looked like GM designed and created my engine bay.

At the bash with absoloutely zero clutch, a bad driver, a dying blazer pump, and ridiculous heat the car ran a 15.27 @ 98.5 mph with a 2.666 60'... I had the 2nd highest trap of the day from my recollection and a crap e/t.....

Into the car right now is going a NVG T550 transmission, NVG T550 axles, Spec Stage 3 clutch, polyurethane tranny mounts, polyurethane lower control arm bushings, a B&M shifter, and a few other little things...

I have only one goal left with this car before I consider her done... a 12.xxx 1/4 mile. I have been running the car at 14 lbs for a few months now and even with no clutch there weren't a lot of cars that could keep up with me once i hit that long 3rd-gear on the isuzu crapbox tranny....

With all that said, here are what I would almost consider the final pictures of Sweetness, minus of course a set of big brakes and one surprise in store for next spring.... but basically after 5 years of eating water for dinner, taking the bus, making car payments and being frustrated, the car is basically finished.

All comments are welcome, good or bad. I would prefer honesty over praise that isn't meant.

Thanks.

I'm sorry but those are the ONLY pictures I have of the engine at the moment, as I lost all my photos a week or so ago due to a hard drive failure. If anybody from the Ontariofires Show, Domestic Tuners Show or JCO Bash have any pics of my car, if you can send them to me please that would be amazing.

Thanks,

-Chris-

Skillz... secret cams + heavily ported head = no means it took away way too much torque down low.... the powerband moved way too far up to make these realistic on a street driven car whatsoever.

I didn't like putting my foot down at 1800 rpm and waiting about 6-7 seconds to get to 3000 rpm and then take off like a bat.

Wow, then my motor must really suck, i have lots of head work, even bigger cams than those, a bigger turbo, lower compression, ect.

Something with you motor must have been seriously wrong if it took 6-7 seconds to hit 3000 rpm. In 6-7 seconds my cars hit 75 mph....

With the cams in the car was very unresponsive under 3000 rpm... and nobody said your motor sucks I'm saying I learned a hard lesson about not matching a cam profile to headwork at all.

I'm sure if I'd known about that they would have been matched a lot better, but they're not. When the stock cams went back in, the car regained its low-end torque and lost that "kick" after 3500 rpm that the hybrid cams give you.

I'm not saying your motor is wrong or bad, I'm saying mine hated those cams for whatever reason. I've seen them on a stock motor and the car moves... but on the head on my car it's not going to happen.

And yes the timing was checked and re-checked 3 times.

I should have put a face after saying my motor sucks, it ment as sarcasm even though it may not have looked that way.

The secret cams aren't all that much different from stock cams and are not that aggresive by any means. Taking that long to rev into your sweet stop in your power band tells me something else what going wrong other than the cams being matched for your set up.

Either way, good luck with everything. I hope you don't run into any more problems.
