tinted licence plate covers...
Saturday, August 05, 2006 9:23 AM
so uhm...ok. i LOVE these and i want to keep them on my car....i ONLY have them on there cuz it accents the car, its white and everything else is black or carbon fiber...its not to "hide" from the vice or to try and make them mad..its just for looks...

big problem, i have a trigger happy big shot cop in my town who HATES them, and me now since i told him to F#$* off last night.

he hasnt written me a ticket yet, but next time he says he will. i absolutly refuse to take them off as i dont see a need cuz he knows me and the car-hes just playing big bad intimidator with nothing better to do.

my ? is....i need some ideas on how to make these damn things work for me...i know i could just put them on at shows and i would get half satisfaction...but yeah thats not good enough so if some of you could throw some ideas my way thad be awesome. (ie hidaway plate or something idk)

thanks

If you're going to get in trouble for it, don't bother with it.

I got pulled over a few months back for my license markers being too dim. The cop told me that as of January 1 of this year, in Illinois, all license plate covers, clear, smoked, colored, etc. are illegal. I told him how ridiculous that was and he agreed, but he said he was just giving me a heads up. He said chances are I would never get a ticket for having them (I have clear ones), but I might get pulled over and given a warning.

So far I haven't gotten pulled over for them, but I told myself if I ever do, I will gladly remove the rear cover since it only gets dusty and it is the one that's more important since it has the sticker on it. However I will not remove the front one because I don't want to ruin my vanity license plates with bugs, rocks, etc. I am hoping cops would understand this and not bug me for it, but if I did continue to get pulled over for it I guess I would just remove it to avoid any further problems because, in my opinion, it's not worth it.

My suggestion to you is to just put them on at shows. It's really not a big deal, they're license plate covers for Christ sake. Are they really worth constantly getting pulled over and ticketed for? I don't think so, but that's just my .02.

Yeah,
As long as they're not too dark you should be ok.
Or don't distort the numbers in anyway.

But it seems like you messing things up with that cop anyway so it won't matter at this point.

I've had one on the rear for going on 2 years now. I've only had it mentioned once in the multitudes of me being pulled over (there was a 6 month stretch where I got pulled over weekly for no front plate).

The less attention that you draw to your car, the less stupid @!#$ you get pulled over for. I'd just say get a clear cover for the time being.

When I first read your post, I thought based on that alone that you were probably 16 or 17. Imagine my surprise when your profile said you're gonna be 22.

So let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly.... tinted license plate covers are illegal in your state (I'll assume, since they are in most states). You have a tinted cover, and a police officer told you you can't. You told said cop to @!#$ off. You think for some reason that you're being singled out because they don't want you car to look "so cool". You think the cop is "being a dick" for enforcing a law that he was even nice enough to warn you about. Did I miss anything? First thing tomorrow you need to go cash a reality check at the First National Bank of STFU.

It's time to grow up dude. Being an adult brings with it adult rules and regulations. If you can't handle that, turn in your keys, move back to Mommy and Daddy's house and let the big kids drive. Just like the rules on this website...no matter how stupid YOU think it is, there is a reason behind every single rule. For the record, that reason is NOT to piss you off or to single out your awesome tricked-out econobox for it's tinted license plate cover.

Bingo. I'll never get why people complain when they get stopped for breaking the law. Grow up - take some responsibility.

for the record...i have 2 14 month year old twins also...so u can flame me for acting "14" again when u get the chance.

i told the cop to "F" off-because he was giving me attitude-saying how he coulda arrested me and impound my car because "i cant read your plate" saying it wouldnt matter if the car was stolen or not-probable cause is all he needs. when im sorry...if you can see the plate writing through that 70% tinted cover you shouldnt be a cop in the first place because YOU ARE BLIND.

yes, the cop was "doing his job" but im sorry, i HIGHLY doubt being a prick is in his job description...and as if you didnt notice bud, the post was about TRYING TO FIX THE SITUATION-not to just leave the cover on and take it up the @$$ with tickets.

I have tinted covers too, sported them since i bought the car in 2001, and they are illegal here in Ontario.
I know they are illegal, I like how they look over bare plates, but I don't do anything that would attract attention
from the cops, thats the trick. I barely speed, don't drive stupidly, don't drive around with the sound thumping,
and have no other ricer accessories. I'd be surprised if the license covers are what are getting you pulled over.

ive never seen someone make such a big deal over something so small. yea maybe you can read the plate during the day (and even sometimes at angles you cant w/ those covers) but when its night out i bet its near impossible to read. theres reasons why some things are laws and some arent. just take it off and be done w/ it. its not the end of the world

I have a Pennsylvania DARE plate which is black and I have a tinted cover on it, at night you can hardly see it even with the plate light on, I'm kinda surprised I haven't gotten stopped yet, but I think it looks so much better to have the plate tinted down a little bit. I even thought about going over the cover with one more layer of light tint.

my town has a population of 2500...we have 12 town cops, the sheriff dept. is stationed in my town...they have 20 officers...and i have 3 state d!cks that live in my town. this cop had nothing better to do than bother me for useless crap...

its a simple case of nothing else to do. i was doing nothing wrong, my car is a show car-not a race car. they cant get me for anything worth a @!#$ so they bust me for stupid stuff like this...but its ok ive found the solution.

im going to get a motorized hideaway licence plate frame-mount it underneath the rear bumper, have it come down as the flip of a switch and keep the rear plate in the stock location with the cover over it-same with the front bumper. then when i drive through my town ill have the plates down. the only forseeable obsticle is going to be somehow getting a 3rd plate from the DMV so im gonna go down there sometime and tell them my front plate fell off or something and see if they will give me a replacement-im sure there isnt a law against having 3 licence plates.

Yeah, that's a great idea. Let one of those "prick cops" find you with a motorized plate mount and tell us how that works out for you. Not to mention the law you think doesn't exist is called "fraudulently obtaining registration plate(s)". Lying to the DMV makes Baby Jesus cry. When Baby Jesus cries, cops come to get you...I guess that makes them pricks too.

In Virginia, you can't even have the CLEAR license plate covers.

I got pulled over back in the day for having a tinted tag cover when I had my old car and before I even did anything to it (that was really the only mod it had!) and I wasn't acting stupid or anything. Stopped at a stop sign, turned left, saw the state trooper coming toward me, pass me, turn around, and come back and pull me over. Must've been looking in his rearview mirror.

Virginia cops are pure a$$es. It hasn't stopped since then, either. I had never been rude to them but after they started pulling me over for PURE bs (I know what's illegal and what's not), I have sorta developed an attitude w/them in certain circumstances. The new car doesn't seem to attract them as much as the other one did, tho (knocks on wood).

they do have something to do. its enforce the law which because you have something illegal on your car they enforce it upon you. wheather you like it or not, it doesnt make the cop wrong for doing his job.

your right though, who wants license plates, they just get in the way and look ugly. while we're at it lets get rid of other useless crap on our cars like VIN's

It's just another excuse for the police to pull you over. What would happen if you were out one night, had a couple of drinks, were fine to drive, but got pulled over for your precious license plate covers. If that same officer you told to f$%k off smells alcohol on you, those covers re going to cost you a whole lot more than you ever thought. This happened to a friend with smoked headlight covers at dusk one night. It's not worth the hassle in my opinion. Great for show, but not for rollin'.

Sounds like the cop is actually pretty tolerant if you ask me. Between your exhaust, windows and license plates, you're begging for tickets, especially if you've already been warned about some of it.

simple as this your being an idiot about something so simple as a piece of plastic. If your "getting away" with all these ILLEGAL mods that you have on your car why are you complaining about this? Take the damn thing off and toss it. Its all very immature if you ask me. Save yourself the trouble and junk the cover don't try to "beat" the law it never works.
