It might be much harder than I think it would be. But, has anyone ever attempted this? I think it would be pretty sweet. It would be something nice to show off at a car show too. I would imagine it would look similar to a 240 hatch.
Like this
Not really. If anything it already pulls off a hatchback look,. The only thing that needs to be done is the trunk os that the back end opens up like a hatchback.
Way back when some one started this but never came anywhere near finished.
Wish I could remember who the hell that guy was.

Its not that I want to get out of a J. I was just wondering if the mod had been done. and that it might be something I work on in a year or so.
i would try it if your willing to try. i mean its dif. and would be sick if you did it and it worked
i'd try and make it look more like a crx.

crx x2.... the aztec and rendevous have a simillar "rear glass" that the 90s crxs had
I was looking at my car today. I think I could pul it off. Im going to have to wait till I get my next car though. After boot camp and I find out where I'll be. I think I would use the back end as is. Have the glass taken out. Chop out around where the rear pillars are.
Reinforce what I need to. Fab up some brackets from a car that is a hatch. I would have the trunk not welded up though. I would weld some small bars to the "hatch" with some weather stripping between that and the trunk. That way I could change it out with another one if I decide too.
If its hard to imagine what im saying, Ill try to make a diagram and post it within a few days.
It would be nice to maybe see some progress pics whenever you get started on it.

Definatly will do progress pics. But this project is probably about 6 months out. so plenty of time to plan. But heres what I just made in piant to show you guys what I mean. I also want to keep it semi stock looking.
I would chop it where the glass is now. And use that as the seperating point. I would need custom glass after this.
I would follow the current weather striping all the way up to the top of the hatch from inside of the trunk.
This is how i would weld the bars on. Except the ends not in the trunk lid would be welded to the upper hatch.
In the inside of the car it would look pretty much stock. (Thats the look I want) The mods I like most are the ones you wouldnt notice unless you were into those cars/know something about them.
Im going to post in the photoshop forum and ask someone to do a mockup for me.
Does anyone have any comments or advice that has done anything similar? Does my method look like it would work to you?
I don't see why not, nobody's done this so there's going to be plenty of trial and error. You just need to give it more than hour before you bump lol
Im pretty excited about this. But fist I have to sell the current Cav. The one I end up doing this on will be a 96-99 z24. That is if im not in a really hot place. Because if thats what happens, I probably end up with a vert.
there was a thread about this a while ago if u search around im sure you can find it, you would probably need to brace the roof a good bit if your going to go through with this.
I will be building up all the edges. The part where I'll have the shocks attached to isn't even part of the car yet. It will be heavy duty. So no worries. I think I have enough welding experience to go trough with it.
So since I was unable to get anyone to use photoshop for me I used paint to try to show what the final product should look like.
It should go from this
To this
Except I want to have skinnier pillars. I didnt reaize how big I made them in the picture.
they dont actually look that bad in your pic, id like to actually see somebody go threw with this.
ive always wanted to do this with my cav!
just too much money for me, and not enuff experience!
i had an old 5speed, i think maybe 87 hatch.
base model in brown. and now i have a tan 2000,
and wanted to keep the whole hatch thing goin!
I would build your frame so that the glass sits ontop of the entire thing and dosent add anything to the C pillar at all, plus you could still use stock glass. Look at a dodge shadow and how that hatch works.
I think it's a cool idea. I'd love to see it done! You could always paint the pillars black so it'd hide them and make it look more stockish.
would work much better with a 2-door SUNFIRE.
Another suggestion to add to it.... maybe chop near the tail lights so that the hatch would go up and then maybe the lower section come down like a truck tailgate.... or just weld up the sides and only have the hatch. I think having the whole truck lid hanging from the hatch lid like that may be too much for the hatch & glass to handle.
