I did some searching before I posted this, and couldn't find what I was looking for so here it goes.
I notice that when I use the defrost mode in my '03 coupe the A/C compressor kicks on even though I am using heat.
Is there a good way to make this not happen anymore other than putting an inline switch in the compressor power line?
I see no reason to have the A/C compressor running all winter while I try to keep the frost off of my windshield.
will having it running make any real difference in my gas mileage?
please advise,
thanks
-Bill
Just leave it alone it runs to keep the compressor lubricated and help to prevent deterioration during winter.

ya my 99 did the same thing i just gave up on the a/c and bought a a/c bypass pulley and got rid of the a/c all together lol and yes it will decrease millage and will also rob some horse power
it comes on because the a/c acts like a dehumidifier system. with the a/c on, it pulls moisture from the inside of the car out.you honestly wont see a decrease in mpg,1 or 2 if anything.

I forgot to put that part
and yea the decrease in highway mileage is 0 and city 1 or 2 mpg depending how long you sit with it on.

I have the same situation on my 97 2.2, and have considered (and decided against) deleting it. The difference is that I really notice it helps with defrosting even in winter, especially when the frost buildup on the interior can be significant. On the other hand, the A/C really rapes the 2.2's already pathetic power. I'd swear it takes 20%.
Typical day in my car, in the form of overwrought fan fiction:
He approached the gentle incline with building dread, for he knew that the Cavalier had not the reserves for this sort of challenge; not with another passenger in the car. Anticipating the outcome, he pushed deeper into the throttle, forcing an upshift. Like an angry crippled midget, the engine noisily climbed into its torque band. The needle on the speedo slowed, then stopped, its labored decent.
"We're gonna be Ok", he assured himself. "We can make it". Then the bitch did the unthinkable: reaching for the HVAC controls, she gripped and then gently turned the knob, engaging the A/C.
The whiplash was immediate; it felt as though the car had driven into a wall of grape jello.
"@!#$", he thought to himself. "We're screwed now".

I wish that were closer to fiction than it is. I really and truly will turn off the A/C before I have to merge into fast-moving traffic. The difference isn't even close to subtle.

mine never lagged that bad it was slightly noticeable but never to that extent.
Hell this motor i got rid of the ac all together and really wasn't very impressed only thing that is noticeable it the barely quicker reving.

if you really want it off for the winter just pull the a/c relay it's located in the fox panel that's under the hood next to the battery. i do it every winter because i only drive short distances >10 miles
Don't you bottom out?
- Yes I do
sorry meant to say fuse box

do not do this. it causes premature seal wear due to non use. there is a reason it says in the owners manual to use the a/c at least once a month. if you dont, the seals will dry-rot, and you'll end up with a leaky a/c system. plus, there's really no reason to. when the system's off, the pulley freewheels. when its on, there's MAYBE a 5 hp parasitic drain, and there is no difference in mpg.
