Hey folks - I need some help. The motor in my '98Z24 finally kicked it . . might have seized a rod bearing, I really don't know. But it taps like crazy and the local Simi Valley Dealership quoted $5300 for a new motor + install. I said no thanks!
I have a year 2000 LD9 sitting in my garage with about 20k miles on it, including the computer. The dealership won't install that motor because, according to their books, it's not listed as a replacement motor for a year '98. I know that it is the same engine, but I think the year 2000 is slightly different. The lack of an EGR in the 2000 motor is the extent of the differences that I am aware of.
So I have a couple of questions:
1. Does anybody know of or have personal experience with a reputable shop who knows enough about j-body vehicles to understand the swap listed here?
2. Is there somebody on here that is capable of doing the swap themselves within a reasonable time frame? If so, what would you charge, when would you be able to do it, and where are you located?
Thanks guys - I appreciate it.
I know a bit about the engine, but have no experience dropping in this style of engine.
Look around for some shops if you're brave enough, they're those shops that will take any job if the price is right...
I'm sure you know the risks...
the only major difference is the knock sensor , the 98-older is a larger 1 wire knock
and the 99-02 use a smaller 2 wire knock sensor
get ahold of dave and get the size you need to drill and tap the hole with for the 98-older knock sensor
all the rest will swap in no problem , ive got a 01 2.4 in my 97 (im using the 99 non-egr pcm)
unfortunatly the 00 computer you cant use with out doing the whole 00 wiring , dash , fuel tank
the egr passage should be free and clear , you will need to use your stock injectors , egr , and exhaust manifold and gasket , everything else off the 00 motor will work
id offer to do it for you , but i really doubt you wanna bring evrything to phoenix az , and dave lives out here now also , but we could do the swap in a weekend
last 1 i did i charged the guy 250 , but his was a auto and they are alot easier to swap motors in
if you got any other questions let me know , info is in my reg
so when u do the install do u get a cel for the egr?
^^^ dave = owner of the site
i got your email tony

I need to get the size also for the drill
I'm Dave.
You need to enlarge the hole with a 29/64 drill bit and then tap with a 1/2-20 tap. Be careful not to go too deep, the sensor is not supposed to be screwed all the way in to the block, it sits out probably 1/4".

Of course something is REALLY screwed up with gmpartsdirect, when I add one of those to my cart it wants to charge over $50 shipping.

Eric - I think I found an upper insert here that I got from Karo a few years back but never installed - so I'll be putting that in. But I am going to order an intake from Gravana - thanks for the link. The car runs great - thanks for doing the swap man - I am so stoked to be back in that car. The whole trip to Phoenix turned out to be a whole lot of fun - didn't realize that so many of you guys met up at your place to work on the cars - I still think I need to get a "vacation" house out there so I can go and play!
Dave - thanks for the part numbers. I also entered them into gmpartsdirect and got the $50 shipping charge on the one side - so I emailed them and asked them to fix it. They just replied today that it's fixed - so now it's like $9 shipping while the other is like $3. Got them ordered and on the way. I really enjoyed having little Joshua check the tire pressure for me 12 times - he's a natural! Best of everything for your new future little son - if he's anything like the first you'll have a couple of prodigy's on hand.
your more than welcome TONY
i was glad to help out !!

Has it really been 4 years?!
Eric, Dave, not sure if you still get email replies to this thread - but hopefully you do; I want to get back in touch. I may need to make another trip to AZ if you guys are still there.
I'm gonna find out what's going on with my '98 but I think it might be an oil pump issue or something . . not sure yet but I will find out though.
Eric - how's the GTO treating you (still have it?)
Dave - I may be able to help out with the server issue (saw the other post under "General").
Good to see the site is going strong and some of the "old-timers" still hanging around!!
Hope to talk soon . . Eric, Dave, do you guys still have my cell number?
