Looking for peoples custom intakes
Thursday, November 05, 2009 8:33 PM
Hey im looking for some ideas on a custom intake out of mandrel bent aluminum or exhaust tubing. I was going to just run 3inch tubing with soft curves starting with a 90 off the throttle body then along the back of the fire wall and down to its stock location, the reason for all the smooth curves is obviously to maximize airflow. I will be using a K&N cone filter. The air sensor I think would be easy as it would just require a hole in the intake with a round rubber grommet from a parts store. I will post alot of pics of removal and install, all the parts used and prices in canadian. ETA should be in two weeks so I have time to plan and see others builds and ideas.

Thanks,

Jensen

Here's some pics of the recent intake change I made for the battery relocation I'm doing.
Here's the before picture of the intake the way it's been routed for years.
The picture shows the battery removed for the relocation but the intake still intact.

Here's the same intake made to work with the battery removed.
I couldn't do a straight pipe directly into the fenderwell so this is as close as I got to it with the parts and pieces I had to work with. It should still flow quite nicely though until I get my supercharger in there.

Hope this helps you in making your own intake.

Thanks for the pics, where abouts are you guys getting that 90 off of the TB? Misnblu, when running your intake into your fender, do you have any adverse affects while driving in the rain, or snow for me. I heard somewhere that it would be better to run a WAI where I live just for the reason that it snows. I only have the 2.2 ohv auto sedan with the B&M PN#70380 shift kit install and a dynomax muffler. Im not looking to make my car run in the 14s on the quarter, just to have some get up and go while driving. Another question I have is the vent line coming off the valve cover able to be swapped for just a regular breather? Because I was under the impression that the vent line was using the air coming into the airbox to draw air from the valve cover, but it seems that people on here are having no negative effects with just a breather. Thanks for the replies!

that vent line is the pcv hose, yes u can put a breather on it.
you could also just use the same hose to put into the new intake. ur choice.

Jenson, been running the car like this for 10 years.
I live in the Deep South, near the coast so we get our fair share of rain.
So go with the cold air and stay out of water deeper than rim deep. Anything more then and lip of the rim, turn around.
It's never failed me yet and yes, I've made some illegal turns to get out of the water.

the TB piece on mine is off the RKSport intake... I had no intentions of "performance" out of my intake.. I had the RK intake and after removing the battery it looked dumb having the intake curve around nothing. So i used a left over 45* pipe from a turbo build and cut one side a bit shorter.. I couldn't see the difference of WAI and CAI giving much improvement over the other so I don't really care.. My whole goal was trying to clean up the engine bay. I've never liked the idea of CAI of having to worry about water/snow but also knew it wouldn't be much of a concern either, If water is that high up on your car you really shouldn't be treading through it in the first place.

My bad on the double post I hope it doesn't do it again I had the show signature on but I don't have a sig. So I should be clear with just running some rubber couplings and some mandrel bent 3" exhaust tubing right down into my inner fender with a K&N filter. So that's said and done, now while I have easy access to my throttle body should I pull it and port, polish it and knife edge the throttle plate? I've done it before to my old quadrajet 350 on my chevy k10 it felt like I gained some pony's but with no dyno numbers it could just be my imagination. Can anyone back up the throttle body mod?

Started my intake, went to a mufler shop and the owner was nice enough to let me dig through his ehaust pile I grabbed a chunk of 3" exhaust from a dodge cummins, it's the piece that goes over the rear axle so I got four 45 deg curves. I also grabbed a one foot chunk of straight three inch. So I got the intake up over the valve cover, it was a good thing I checked for hood clearance because the way I wanted to run it, it hits a steel plate that runs along the back of my valve cover which in turn raises my intake just an inch too much. I had to turn it thirty degrees so now it sits almost 90 deg to the engines. Crap this is hard to explain, I'll snap some pics tomorrow. Im just throwing around the idea to make my intake into a CAI because if I run a WAI it won't look purdy. I also will be picking up the AEM bypass because I can dodge puddles but the wife seems to aim for the damn things. So after I run spot welds all around the seams of the intake they will be grinded down then a flapper wheel over to make them dissappear completely then the entire thing will be sand blasted primed and painted satin black. This things gonna look saweet!!!!

Modified my weapon-R intake into a "cold air"

Then got bored and made it all 3"

And now its a 3" little ram air. seems to work the best from everything ive had IMO

besides the 90 degree elbow from weapon-r its all just stainless steel 3" tubing. i purchased 2 J-bends off ebay and seem to work better then anything you can buy brand name.

remove your washer reservoir and run your intake straight down .

but....I like my washerfluid So a custom cheap 3" cold air intake cost me nothing in regards for the tubing, it takes two dodge cummins rear exhaust pipes and one chunk of straight. Ill post some pics here for you guys

I've got a 2001 cavi base model 2200. I'm thinking about getting a cold air intake and then extending the plumbing custom and making a nice funnel/scoop that attaches to the hole where the Z24's have fog lights. Think it'll be worth the 20 dollars in plumbing? I do a lot of highway driving, so I figured maybe a "ram-air" setup could help a little. Plus it'd be sweet...

you want ram air effect? get the rksport SS hood lol .. stick with your stock air box and get a k&n filter. and replace the stock rubber intake hose with pipes.. and there you have it.

I wonder if there is enough room to locate the air filter behind the opening of the hood, with custom intake piping? Not visible from the outside, just in direct path of the airflow coming through the hood... Probably wouldn't be worth the extra work though, wouldn't be any more effective than a CAI, except the pipe would probably be shorter, so you should get a slightly quicker response.

A hood may cost me a little more than a few bucks for plumbing, just saying. Maybe I could try and stuff something behind the hood opening. That might just work.
