Should we curb the classifieds here???
Wednesday, August 24, 2005 11:53 AM
Every now and then I post this sort of message to get an opinion from you guys.

It seems lately that this forum is being overrun by ads.

I don't mind people posting stuff up for sale, but there's so many here that it's becoming impossible to have a normal conversation.

At the very least, do you think it would be a good idea for me to lock stuff that's being continually bumped back up? I mean, if nobody wants it in the first week, there's no value to the rest of us in just keeping it here forever right?

I agree....there is a classifieds section on this site for a reason!

I see no problem, my main reason for coming into this forum is looking for good local deals.....

Yeah I see your point Kev but I think if the classifieds were split into local sections it would be alot better....

But your right, if stuff gets continually bumped (i.e. those 16" Z24 rims for $600) then it should probably be locked

I agree with the possible issues, but the classifieds are so inefficient that sometimes its nice to see local posts.

The 1 (or maybe 2 week) limit could be good though.

Yeah, I definitely see the value of posting local stuff for sale. That's never been in question. I just don't want to see our local hangout here get overrun with them.

If they are valuable posts like someone replying to a message that made it to the bottem or something like that then yea. If it's just that person trying to sell an item then yea lock it after a week or 2 if it is the person bumping it then yea lock it.

I will admit I bumped my memphis stuff but it was kinda a valid post but I will leave it up to you Kev your the mod

id say its turned into a classified forum and you cant even find a normal thread for the for sale crap

the stuff that keeps getting bumped should be locked and/or deleted and maybe a set of rules at the top so people who keep doing it should know better to stop

Well the rules here are the same as for the rest of the site, so technically all of them could be deleted. They're left alone because we all know that they can be useful.

What I'm finding though, is that many are posted by people who aren't even regular members here. I'm going to start paying better attention to that and toss out anything that seems to be posted by someone only here to make a quick buck.

Regular regional members are welcome to post stuff they've got for sale, but we're not a free classifieds section for anyone who has something to sell.

I think that's fair and will help make this forum useful again.

I say leave 'em...

That is, if they are car related and all items are listed in out post.

I like it because you know it'll be shipped within canada, but if there's no activity for a week, have it locked, thats a fantastic idea Weasel, good on ya!

I don't even know what that means.

It's the ones that are bumped every few days, with maybe a new detail or something added, that trouble me.

Get it right in the first place. And if people are interested in a lower price, they'll offer a lower amount for it. You don't need to drop the price by a few bucks and then bump it up again.

I think we're mostly in agreement here. The sale posts are of benefit to us, but not after a week or so.

And hopefully we can get some real activity going here again when the space is cleared up a bit.

Come on now.

Keep FS posts car related and list everything that is FS in one post (no new post for each item).

I agree with everything else.

...and remember, winter is around the corner... forum activity will be dismal...

umm maybe it's just me, because I can see that I think differently, but I don't think forsale stuff have to be in here, put it in the classfieds, leave it there, put a note saying ship in Canada only, or something, I think most people here can read a classified ad, and realize that the seller isn't going to ship it. Oh well. I just don't like seeing all the forsale stuff in here, I have bought all my stuff from the classifieds, and haven't had anything shipped yet. Oh well, I guess it's all up to Kev anyways so do as you please, ha ha

I can see both sides of the coin here. Yes it's nice to know that it is a local item being sold, and this forum is starting to get crowded with for sale items. What if there was a second classified section dedicated to Canadian sales. Rather than a regional classified as Deflux suggested above (good idea though), it might be easier just to have a Canadian and an American Classified. That way Canadians can still check out deals within our own country, and we won't get hit with brokerage, exchange, etc., and we don't have to try to filter through all the American goods we aren't really interested in. Just a thought.

i agree that they should not keep bumping stuff up over and over again those should be locked, but we dont always look in the classified for stuff and it would be nice to see it here cause you know rght away it is a local guy, also pusting local some times you can get a good trade going, but the threads were the original guys keeps re-posting to keep it up at the top of the list that should be curbed

I agree there should be a lock on sale posts... the post should consist of what the product is, where your from and price... etc... then an email for more info... we really dont need to see the convo's between two or more people making a deal...

although im worried that may cause a bit less security when people are trying to scam others... i have seen many posts where the replies from people show the fraud or whatever...

the other downsides are that WW will have to lock every post... but if WW will look threw to make sure there isnt any fraud (which he usualy does anyways ) while locking them, maybe things can work
