Another strut mount question
Wednesday, March 01, 2006 6:28 PM
I've read a bunch of threads, but im still confused. I have a 2000 2.2 cavy and I want to repalace all the front upper strut parts to 95-99. M y question is which parts do I need and do I have the choice of just changing the mount and bearing or do I have to change everthing. Also is there any kit I can buy that just includes everything I need.
Thankyou for your patience.

Matt

You need everything. The bearing plate, bearing, and spring seat.

Strut mount is those three things together.

That's just the bearing plate IIRC.. I could be wrong though.

Ok I was doing some more reading and Ive come to the conclusion that I need

2 Bearing plate

2 bearing

2 spring seats

2 washers that go just under the strut nut.

All for 95-99 cavalier

Anything else????

I have a question...

Why are you doing this?

Well there better parts so 1) for upgrade purposes 2) my steering wheel makes a popping noise when I turn the wheel and 3) I want to get koni yellows in the near future and some GC coilovers so I thought it would be a good idea.

You don't need the washers, they're for 00+.
Popping probably is mount bearing gone bad.. So you would need to replace at least one side.
I'd see if you can get a set from a yard, then toss whatever isn't good. Shouldn't be very expensive.

the mounts go together differently, when you take it apart you'll see.

there is a top piece that holds the mount and the bearing together that you will need. and finding that spring seat is a pita, there is one dealer that has one in stock on the west coast of Florida ( I'm east coast). and that it. not expensive either i think they said $12

small thread jack, does anyone remember who had the coil-over install using the old style mounts pictures would help him out allot. in assembling them.

What is the top pieace that holds the mount and bearing together called? Not the bearing plate or spring seat?

Ok. GM calls that a "washer". I call it a retaining washer. It's the same for all years anyway.
We took washer to mean spacing washer (required for 00+ w/ some after-market struts).

00+ has no such piece or my 95-99 mounts would be on an done with. also the spring insulator is different, there is a notch in the older mounts about 2.5 -3 inches across to keep the spring in place. the one on the 00+ style is smooth all the way around and does not like the older mounts, at least on my attempt to put them in it didn't.

Ok lets see if I have this right yet. If I want to replace all the parts to 95-99 above the spring, I need

- upper spring insulator.
- spring seat
- bearing plate
- bearing
- upper washer (retaining washer)
- upper nut.

Right???????
