Well, time has come for my cavalier to have the rear brakes done.
What parts are needed to complete a rear brake replacement? I've owned the car for 3 1/2 and have never done anything to the rear brakes, so I am assume things are pretty rusty behind the drums.
Thanks for the help.
I'm running a GP on the brake line upgrade equipment. Check out the GP forum, look for the Neon Disc Brake Swap GP.
I think he's talking about a maintenance job here. LIke... what does he need when it comes to new shoes, springs, drums, etc.
Look before you decide to replace anything. My 97 had stock shoes and their only 75% gone. Still had years left on them. I only took them off for the IRS swap.
Thanks WW, I am talking maintenance. Sorry I should have mentioned that.
Basically I had a mechanic look at it, I was told everything is in rough shape. Shoes are bad, drums are bad, he mentions bleeder are to rusty to use.
I seen drums and shoes on ebay for $60, they should work right?
Just go down to the local Canadian Tire, get two sets of shoes, two drums, two wheel cylinders, two hardware kits, and a small bottle of brake fluid. You can get away with doing drums without the proper tools, but it makes it easier to have the proper ones. I've seen drum brake tool kits at parts stores before.
Keep in mind, that if you had a torch, you could probably get the bleeder screws undone, but since the wheel cylinders are pretty cheap, its not a big deal.
I was told that the shoes can change composition over time so they end up lasting forever but are rock hard and don't really work anymore after a few years.
Anyone know if that holds water?
Thanks for all the help guys.
WW: Modern shoe materials, no. Old stuff, yeah.
Anything rusted can loosened right up with enough torch.
How much do you trust that mechanic that's telling you "everything" is bad. I just don't trust mechanics much since I learned to fix things myself. Seems like things go bad much less often now.
