Suspension Question
Tuesday, May 08, 2007 9:11 PM
Hey, ive been around a decent amount of time, and i have asked the question a couple times before, but never gotten a solid answer that will fix my problem. I consider myself pretty "knowing" when it comes to stuff like this, I did do it myself, and nothing can be that hard,

Im lowered on Sportlines and d-specs. Great setup, great ride. Theres only one problem. When i turn the wheel, when the car is stopped, the springs "pop" or "clunk" like they are binding up on something. What could this be? I have heard people say that they arent seated right, but i swear they are, the end of the springs are in the right place on the mount. Does anyone else have this problem??

try replacing your strut mounts,if they cant turn freely, they will pop like that, and bind up. ive seen a lot of this, especially on grand prixs, and it fixes it every time.

Strut mounts do seem to be the usual suggestion for those symptoms. Seems like it's a documented and accepted issue with many lowering setups on these cars -- but I haven't seen anybody with a absolute solution. I thought for sure I was going to have problems when I went to D-Specs and Sportlines, but mine have been nothing but silent (knock on wood).

its not because of the lowered suspension that this happens, its the fact that inside the strut mounts they have bearings (made with plastic bb's) that bind up, and cause the top of the spring to stay put, while the bottom turns......until....POP! pretty much its just a matter of time when you use crappy materials to make your parts with, but what can you do. (incase your wondering, replacement mounts have plastic ball bearings to, I havent found any otherwise at least)

I have d-specs and tenzo-r springs... I have the same problem. and i replaced the strut mounts all the way around when I put the suspension on the car.

Its tempermental, sometimes it does it, sometimes it doesnt... it IS embarassing tho, because its LOUD outside the car.

Listening for a solution other than new mounts, because they were new with the lowering setup...

Heres another suggestion, If you replaced youre strut mounts, And it still makes that noise, I know monroe sells those poly insolators that go on the bottom of the strut coils, Acts as cushion, I know the the stock struts have them, Usually the stockers are rubber, dont last more then 5 years.

Good Luck.

This really does sound like a bearing issue, and as mentioned, the bearings are part of the mounts. Start there.

ill try it, has anyone ever tried using another type of mount? like one without plastic bearings? why the hell would someone make a bearing out of plastic bbs? are you sure thats a correct statement, there are tons of pressure resting on them.......

i thought the same thing the first time i saw one apart. i dont know of any that use a steel ball or otherwise superior material, so if you find a company that does let me know.

never used them, but id bet that they have steel balls (they had better for the price), im not sure of the compatability of them with stock, or made for stock repacement lowering springs. i thought they were only for like the ss system, but i could be wrong on that.

I didn't read all the replies just the original post, but its strut mounts, the bears crap out and the pring pops because the mount isn't spining liek it should, instead its trying to spin the spring with it, which makes it pop.

so just buy new strut mounts?

^^ I did and I still have the problem even with new mounts... I guess The mount couldda been bad from the shop, but both? If anything I would say they dont like the stiffer ride I have them on, and they went bad faster.

I gave up till later on the project, Working on the inside of the car now.

why is your ride stiff? what setup do you have? I am on dspecs and sportlines, and my ride isnt stiff in the least. thats what confuses me, it rides perfect. why are the mounts bad?
