i've just picked up a rear strut bar and looked and noticed that the two upwards bolts for the strut have nuts welded to the body of the car... I've seen people put washers underneath the inside most bolt, to mount them, but that seems akward the way it sits....to "correctly" install it has anyone tried to cut these welded nuts and actually have the mount for the bar sit flush with the body....
How dare GM weld the J-body's nuts to itself, good grief. I'd say to just bust the welds OR look for topic or sticky on this website or internet regarding rear strut installation, I'm sure it will tell you how to remove the bolts.
well for starters do not listen to this guy and bust the welds.....
jsut bolt it on top, thats what everyone else does. also search
My car may run 18s, but I can do your taxes in 10 seconds flat.
JBO lube - they would never have enough in stock and we'd never see RodimusPrime again
i have searched and saw the guys using washers to hold the mounts in place but that didn't seem right... shouldn't the mount sit flush with the body like on the front bar...? my question was has anyone tried to get the mount to sit flush, by breaking the welds and how successfull were they.... : also anyone know what thread pitch/length those bolts are, soi can go out and get new bolts and nuts for the "washer" solution--- thanks
Take out your Factory Bolt,And go to a Hardwear Store and Buy longer ones and then use a Lock Nut and washer or A washer and Lock washer...No need to Break off the factory ones..
I'm using the RKSport rear strut mount and found no difficulty with the strut bar.
I did use large washers in those areas that needed it so that the nuts wouldn't go through the strut mount when tightening down.
Here's a pic of what I'm talking about.
All the bolts are stock with nothing added to the setup. You can see how it was done with the picture.
The finished product.
Hope this helps.

Did you not read ANY of the posts in here?
Don't bust the welds. Go buy nuts and put those on TOP of the nuts that you're thinking of busting off. Attach your bar with those new nuts.
I had read a thread about putting a nut on the weld but I was just hoping for a better solution since it seems that everybody bust the welds. I'll try what you said.

That is the best solution. Don't bust any welds.

It seems that everybody busts the welds? Not true. Nobody does this. It's a hack job and a bad idea.
I could get into why it's a bad idea, but shouldn't have to. Don't do it. Those welded nuts do more than just make it easier to piece the car together on the line.
thanks for the info
I'll keep the welds ! Maybe you have a solution for another problem I have, I can't find a way to install my front Ebay strut bar on my fire 2.2, I've tried to add washers but the clearance between the bar itself and the throttlebody is not enough, it sucks I already searched for a install thread about it but I didnt found something clear. Plus I have made many call in junkyards in my area and I can't find a front strut of a Vert, other than GM dealer that ask 250$ can for it... so I'm forced to find a way to install this crap.
Quick question what size nut do you use for the extra two nuts.
Just hit the junkyard and grab some from another J-body.
The front strut nuts are the same as the rears so you can use those.
