hey guys before i ask this i wanna say that i read the faqs and searched and all that. ...now....i want to drop my 97 cav...3 inches...and ive read enough posts to convince me that a spring cut is not the way......so am asking the experts how do i drop my car 3 inches without offending my fellow J-body lovers.....also i cant rob a bank so lets keep this as cost effective(meaning cheap) as possible..thanks..i know u cant put a price on performance...but let be real i bought the car for a grand...so am not gonna break bank for it
i bought my car for far less then you did ... 3" dont will not be cheap..
to get close to 3" you need to go with coilovers and yellows... ground control coilovers i do recommend. theres no cheap way of doing it.
Indeed. I'm looking for a 1.7 front - 2.3 rear drop, and I'm probably going to end up spending around $800 when I do, unless I can find what I need used.
If you want to get what you need as inexpensively as possible, check out the classifieds, and try to find used equipment.
When I bought my car the previous owner cut the springs, and left it on stock struts. That may be all fine and well for about a month or two, but when I bought the car the struts were already blown. Trust me, you don't want to drive your car like that.
3" drop will require coilovers as mentioned and there are not many out there that are good for our cars. also with coilovers you will need tokico dspecs or koni yellows since they are the only 2 struts to handle that kind of a drop. face it your gonna be looking to spend 1k to get your car that low.
3" is too much of a drop to retain enough suspension travel for the car to be safely driven.
So the next question might be "How do I increase the amount of available travel?"
Now you're looking into a whole lot of coin as you'll need to create a tube frame structure and relocate your suspension mounting points. Basically, you're now talking about a body drop.
Doesn't sound like this fits within your "on the cheap" plan though, so the short answer is... you can't.
yep, buy some $25 shipped ebay coilovers and drop it 4" on stock struts.
is that what you wanted to hear? you cannot cheap out on the suspension if thats what you want to do and be safe or have any kind of ride 'quality'.
the fact of the matter is,
do it right once.

That's always an option! He didn't say he wanted to drive the car after it was dropped...

you could always bag it ... but again, not cheap
if you bought the car for a 1000 why are you trying to make it "look cool" ? all your gonna do is "look dumb" when your car is bouncing all over the place.
im gonna steal someone elses quote by saying.....4" spring drop = anti-poon

please dont hate on me cuz someone @!#$ed in your cereal this morning...it doesn't matter how much i bought it for..i can always improve on it.....thanks to everyone ..i ordered some tein basics and new strut mounts...with my next check ill get a camber kit and a spring compressor so i can get my 3 inches.....by the way a couple of you guys are real @!#$s..sorry for the language..
good luck with your axles... they're gonna wear out quick down three inches. if you'd saved another $400, you could have put together a decent air system. but hey, another $1k will get you another car.

its not that you need stronger axles. the problem is the angle of the joints. riding that low tears them up. its really just an all around bad idea. honestly, bags would have put you where you want to be, and you could lift up and save your axles/undercarriage.

I have no "hate"... just a recent experience to share.
A buddy of mine decided his Eibach Sportlines weren't low enough... so he cut them. Two and half coils, I think... When assembled, the springs were no longer held tight by the strut & mount... so when he went over a large hump in the road at high speed, the spring "coiled out" around the bottom mount, then the tire shot up into the fender, jammed, then sheared off all 5 studs from the wheel hub. Needless to say, his girlfriend who was riding passenger in the car was not overly impressed by all this. The car was pretty mashed... not a pretty sight. I'll have to dig up the pics.
Don't go cheap...
...j
somebody please tell me i can settle for 2.5.....am not going any lower or should i say higher than 2 inches......other wise there's no reason to drop it...this is what am going for
isn't that pj's car just pm him and ask what he has
he has the Gravana Coilovers
btw me, having a dirty mind and all... I laughed my ass of when I saw the topic "help 3 inches" LOL my first thought was they have pills for that nowdays
