front wheel gap
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 10:29 AM
i was just wanting to get some info on why alot of j-bodys out there sit oddly when lowered. i have noticed that on alot the front fender gap will be alot more than the rear. if anyone could let me know why this is and maybe help me with some pics of some that actually lower in the front it would help me out alot. and also would there be a difference in stance between the coupe and sedan? thanks any help is wanted

because they sell springs that have a bigger drop in the rear.

yea but how do you get your front gap to match the back?

Some springs, like the Sportlines, have a bigger drop in the rear because the cars come stock with a forward rake.

Only time you should see a car that looks lower in the back is if it has poorly adjusted coilovers, or for some reason has weight added to the back whether it be from passengers or a big stereo or a pile of bricks in the trunk.

dont buy the springs that have a lower drop in the rear....

or get coilovers, thats probably the best solution.

and by coil overs, i mean REAL coilovers, not $40 ebay deals.

ok, will d-specs struts be any different spring mounting wise then the stock or some kyb agx's?

no, the struts are all externally the same, besides the ones that have an external adjustment....

well a friend of mine bought some offbrand springs that say they drop 1.8" in the front and he put them on kyb agx and it only dropped like half that, but i just found some pics of some sportlines and they look way lower. why is that? i just didnt know if it might have been the struts.

Maybe the "offbrand" springs are crap?

Also the drop of a spring is measured from the ride height of a BRAND NEW CAR, springs sag over time, and a car with 100k miles sits lower than a car with 0 miles on it for this reason. Also, go back and look at your friends car in a week. The springs usually need to settle, and will drop into thier final resting place in a week or 2.

Also, I agree with WW

probably! lol will sportlines and some agx's or d-specs bring me to a pretty low gap?

sportlines wont work with agxs their too low. you need dspecs. sportlines are a pretty low drop.

Or Konis. I used to ride on Konis and Sportlines and it was great.

i agree. i prefer konis but alot of people new to suspensions dont like the idea of cutting up a stock strut to insert the koni front

Get someone more experienced for the install.

That's what I've got now. Love them. I've never been terribly happy with the front bearing setup, but back in the day where were no better options. So long as you keep on top of the maintenance, all is well. If they make some noise, you clean 'em up and all is well.

If I was buying right this moment, I think I'd go with the Tein SS's setup. But that's just me.

Front ones are inserts. The rear ones are complete units (minus the spring perch).

If you're getting them used, then you'll likely be getting them fully assembled as once they're together, they can be a huge PITA to get back apart, and really, what's left of the stock parts would be useless for anything else.
