Complete Rear Brake Overhaul

What would this consist of? I just replaced my front brakes and there is a grinding noise and a rubbing (metal to metal) noise that appears to be coming from the back. I've had my '96 Z24 for about five years and did the front brakes once, and have never attempted the rear brakes, nor do I lknow how often they need attention. I checked the forum here (did search, and read several threads), but chose to start this thread. There are a couple threads that get me started, but I think I need opinions on this here. Other questions I have:

How much for a complete rear brake overhaul?
How to do a diagnostic for the rear brake system?
Is it hard for the layman to do a complete rear brake overhaul?

Keep in mind, I am going to use just stock rear brake parts from either O'Reilly, NAPA or AutoZone.

I appreaciate any help anyone can give me.

Well you will need a shoe kit, it sounds like your drums will be shot, and you will want a hardware kit.

You once you remove the drums will see if the wheell cylinders are leaking or not, if yes, replace them both, dont do just one.

You will need some special tools for the springs.

To adjust your brakes in the end you put the drum on and spin in, there needs to be a fair amount of drag on it, if it spins a lot, adjust your shoes outwards

good luck

You dont NEED the brake spring tools you can get away with a wrench.

Drums are pretty straight forward just remember to only do one at a time in case you forget where things go.

this was my experience. over the corse of 120k miles the rear shoes have been replaced 2 times. both times was due to cracking. the original linings were still in ok shape at 80k, but they were cracked, so i replaced them. after another 40k miles the rear brakes were starting to lock up bad. upon inspection i found the right side wheel cylinder was leaking a bit. brake dust was starting to cake to the inside, causing it to stick, and lock up when i stepped on the brake. and once again i found the linings were cracked. so i said @!#$ it i'm doin it all. heres what i got for my overhaul:
in total it ran me $170 without shipping. and i ordered the wrong cylinders the first time round.
new ac/delco shoes, new raybestos drums, new raybestos hardware kit, and new ac/delco wheel cylinders. i wound up having to replace a brake line too, due to rust. so if you're doing the wheel cylinders yourself soak the @!#$ outta the hardline fitting and hope for the best. luckily i had easy access to a line bender. just a heads up. the springs and stuff can be taken off (with some persuasion) with a set of needlenose pliers and a $5 drum brake spring tool, but as stated before, just make sure you only do one side at a time so you dont forget place. its pretty simple stuff.
