Tried searching and can't find any details. Someone posted about getting an open ended box wrench to get them off and then using an impact wrench with a deep socket to put them back on. I have no idea what they did with the box wrench... but that's what was posted.
Does the adjuster come off? Is there any way to put a socket over it and hold it with an allen key like you do with the Reds or other struts?
Do I need a deep socket if I intend to work on a set?
I dont know what the problem is but when i installed mine....i used an 1/2 impact. The strut rod doesnt spin when you use a good fast impact. Same with taking it off.
I don't have an impact wrench.
Also, doesn't the adjuster stick up a fair bit in the middle? Enough to need a deep socket if you're using an impact wrench?
deep well socket, i bought an impact socket... intending on tightening it down myself and taking it to a friends place and putting the impact on it but never got to it
i honestly don't have air tools either, but i tightened them down to where the split washer was flat and tried as hard as i could to get it down more and called it a day
i check them often and no problems at all
I used a crescent wrench and a wrench on the back, on the front I used the impact with a 21mm deep-well socket I believe. you can get a cheap electric impact for like 30-40. it will do the job. it's not as nice as air tools, but it better than hand tools.
as far as the adjuster goes, you might clear it with a regular socket, you may get that nut started but I don't think you'll finish with it. it's a close call heres a pic on mine
And it doesn't come off, right? So there's no way to stick an allen key down there or something if the shaft starts spinning and you don't have an impact wrench?
I don't buy into the "clamp the shaft with vicegrips" theory of strut nut removal.
Is there a hex nut or anything around the adjuster to grab onto?
nope its in there, no allen key holes that i ever saw on there. I never even thought about using vise grips ,
Deep well 22mm socket. Regular one will not fit over the adjustment peice. I just use a breaker bar, and give it a couple quick snaps, and it usually comes off.
vise grips are fine trust me
ive done it many many many times and it never even scratches the rods, i bet my car on it
