I have a 2003 Cavalier and I am unsure of how to do the rear brakes on my cavy, has anyone attempted this yet? I have taken them off, and appear to be to torsion like bars used as springs. How do I get those off, and replace the pads?? Any help would be great!
Thanks,
-James
After downshifting into 3rd, and redlining, might as well find 4th and find the speed limiter....its therapeutic.
How many miles are there on your car? They don't generally need to be replaced until 50k+ miles. Are you sure you don't just need to adjust them?
69,000 miles

Grab a service manual... it's pretty complex with all the little pieces... and they have to go on in a certain order.
You'll need the new brake shoes.. if the hardware in the drums is in bad shape you might want to get a new spring kit as well. Plus some brake lubricant for the six spots on each backing plate where the shoes rub... brake cleaner for when you take it all apart...
My wheel cylinders on the 99 Z24 were completely rusted to crap... so I replaced them.. pretty cheap, $17 each. Cheap insurance
Drums I don't think need to have anything done to them unless they're beyond the maximum wear, at which point you replace them. I think it's the 03+ models that have larger brakes.. so if they ask you what size the drums are, it's probably the larger of the two.

i got you all beat.....just broke 93,000 on stock rear everything....i'll be doing them this week. I got my '01 with 87,000 from a friend of mine and he assures me, with records to prove, that he has never ever done the rear brakes. not too bright of me to let that go, i know.
