This has been buggin me for about 3 months now.. Some days I'm driving and my abs lights pops on then it goes off sometimes when I'm driving, sometimes it won't go off till I turn the engine off and restart.. There is absolutely no difference in brake pressure, or stopability when it goes off and on.. Only thing I can really figure is a possible electrical issue with a sensor.. If that is the case I'm pretty sure it's my front passanger side brake casue'n the issue for the simple fact it was tugged on one time by accident when I was redoing my brakes.. Has this happened to anyone? Is there any equipment out there to test my sensor? or anyone know how much they are by chance?
beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?
i just fixed a similar problem with mine. i put in new struts, and wen i was done, the ABS, trac off, and service lights were on. turns out a plug came un-clipped. slide under the car and look at the plug that goes into each front brake assembly. they are facing down towards the ground. see if anything visible is wrong like unplugged or loose, or cut wires. if you need pics of the plugs, i can get some in the morning.

is the abs light on. if yes scan for history codes and follow trouble code diagnostic procedure. do you know how to use a digital volt meter ?
if you know how to use a dvom check for broken wire and connects and resists of wire and sensor on ohm setting
Note that if the ABS light is on then your ABS system is disabled. Your brakes will feel the same until one of the wheels locks up.

i was told that when the ABS is disabled that the rear brakes grab more than the front. So wouldn't braking feel different... more so if you are a late braker into corners. (autoXer's know what i'm talking about)
My ABS light came on the other night... massive wheel hop (reason not for this forum) anyway.. ABS light came on... then after i stopped off at the gas station checked the fuse... it was fine... the but it back in and the light has been off since.
On the newer cars, the ABS controller also controls the proportioning so that's entirely possible. Certainly it can cause the rear to lock up before the front, which can be very dangerous.
yeah.. i found out the "fun" way during the winter autoX events... i tell you though.. its a great way to learn proper braking for cornering
ok enough with my possible highjack....
Back to the topic...
I hope you resolve your ABS issue. let us know what it is/ was.
eazy: checked all plugs, all in, nothing hanging down, nothing loose.
Steven: Ive scanned the codes but 1 problem NOTHING shows up even when the ABS light is on. (Odd isn't it)
Old Skool: Ive checked all leads every wire known to man for the ABS system nothing is wrong per specs from Gm manual.
Wild: I figured that at first also to but, Ive gone literally 90 mph slammed on the brakes no wheel hop, nothing locks.. stops just fine.. just this damn light goes on and off lol (tried numerous times diff MPH and stopping, corning and nothing it all feels the same before all this happened.
Im taking it to a brake place, then if all fails to Gm (god forbid)
Do you think the ABS could possibly have something to do with my emergency brake not working correctly? I'm still haveing issues, i.e. i can pull it all the way back and still drive.. Ive tightened it up on the drums even tried driving backwards to tighten it.. yet nothing works.. hence why I can't get my car inspected! won't pass... 1 thing also nothing is broke on it.
I wonder if the wires may have a bare spot somewhere else and it archs.. I had a car once if I hit the gas to hard it cut off because the mounts were bad so the engine rocked and rubbed off the plastic on a wire.. and grounded out the engine.. poof cut off and blew a fuse to my fuel pump
Welp I'm off for 3 days so time to rip it up!
Thanks for the help guyz I'll post if anyone finds out what it is.
Oddest things always happen to my cars..
beer is like a chick.. well not really its just beer, it be cool thou huh?
from what i was told, you need to take your car into a Chevy dealship to have that ABS code scanned, Autozone and your local mechainc dont have the scanner to do that
Im a Xbox 360 fanboy...and damn proud of it!!
maybe a faulty harness. it happened to me where mine would come on every once and a while. turned out to be a bad harness
here is something that happen to me, are all the abs wire in ther proper clip connectors. sometimes high voltage magnetism. From igition coils or wires or stereo wire under high loads ( high speed or current draw) will cause high magetism and tell the computor, that, one wheel is going faster and turn on abs light. Basic abs systems, monitor wheel speed all the time. However, the abs controller is on stand by mode, when brake pedal is depressed. So, you needed to know, if it happens when, it is accelerating, or only under braking. Question, have you done rear brakes recently? Did you machine drums too course? Did you over adjust rear Brakes? Are the wheel cylinders sticky or siezied? Is you E-brake siezied on slightly?
two bits ($0.25) says it's the ring around the CV.
CAR GODS MADE THE 1.6 SOHC TO MAKE US 2.2 OHV GUYS FEEL BETTER.
Update:
Old: Good point.. wierd thing is i can start the car and it will still be in park and go off. I have no system, lights goes on with or without lights, stero, really anything on a/c vents etc..Also they are in all the correct spots the clips/wires
Yes I have done the rear brakes I think about 2 months ago the drums are new and the brakes were adjusted correct cylinders work great no stick nothing.. now the Ebrake just doesn't work period but thats another issue ( I can't get it tight)
Bagged: where is the harness? how much do they cost?
I did have the light scanned from the dealership they couldn't find nothing wrong..
Even a brake place found nothing wrong drums are brand new as well all the hardware behind it..
I was talking to a couple of the tech guys up there.. they are emailing others around the U.S. for similar problems hopefully someone knows something. They also think it may be something with the ebrake since it doesn't do what it is suspose to do..
I should hopefully have an update on monday around 4 or so.. if all else fails I'ma just cover up that damn light lol
Thanks again
Old E
