suspension/brake tuning ???
Tuesday, May 24, 2005 11:12 AM
I have upgraded most major areas of my suspesion, I am running GC coilovers on koni yellows, front and rear strut mounts, and larger sway bars, I have the bfg g-force tires on 17" rims. I am running kvr sloted rotors with carbon pads up front, and stock drums in the rear. The car is dropped about 11/2" - 2", and the koni's are set about middle for dampening.

I am happy with the ride on the street, and I just got back from my 1st autocross last week, and am fairly happy with the suspension (allthough I have to admit that there is a lot of learning left in the drivers seat.)

Around corners there was a minor amount of overstear, which only came into effect when I did something really stupid... My bigger tuning question is about braking... The car plowed really hard during braking, I never felt the ABS come on, so I don't think I locked out the wheels, but the car really reacted that way. I basically could not turn under braking at all. I am wondering if this has something to do with my unmatched front and rear brakes, as I assume my front will outpower my rear by a sizable margin, or is this just a caracteristic of fwd cars?

i;d say keep on with the learning.

fwd cars are usually built with understeer.

for your setup, strut mounts really dont make much a difference, but what size swaybars front and rear, there are quite a few choices.

also you said the car plowed pretty hard during braking? remember, slower is faster in the turns, dont wait till the last second to hit the brakes, try to make it smoothly through, tap the apex, and accelerate out. for every bobble, you lose 1-3 tenths (the times you had oversteer from possible mistakes).

also not turning under braking... sounds as if you were too fast... personally i usually dont turn under braking, brake first, roll throught the first part of the turn, and after you hit the apex, accelerate out.

also what was your tire size and tire pressures for said event? brakes should be fine, but seems to be more your driving style.

it gets better over time though.

Thanks, I definitly had a heavy right foot driving style
I was running 38psi in the rear, and 45psi in the front for tire pressure, the size was 215/45/17
I meant to say strut bars, not mounts, oops. I have the eibach set of swaybars.
thanks for the help

I can just about guarantee that 45psi in the front is way too much! What's the maximum listed on the tire?

Hey Kevin, I am going to go and check the tires for max pressure.
I was taking tire pressure advice from some of the more experienced racers that day, I found this thread about tire pressure over in the racing forum. http://www.j-body.org/forums/read.php?f=48&i=10141&t=10141
