When I upgrade my brakes I wanna hopefully get something that doesnt rust, I live on gravel and then in mornings they will have a small coat of rust on them due to condensation and the dust.

Bare steel or cast iron rusts..........period!

The F1 and Lemans and maybe even Nascar folks use ceramic rotors, and I bet they don't rust, but each rotor probably costs $1k to $2k each. Something tells me that they are not available in stock Cavalier sizes either.

Sorry, rusting rotors is just something we all have to live with.

I have brembo slotted replacement rotors that have zinc coating and they have yet to rust. The only thing that you get is after i wash the car, the place that the pad touches gets a rust color but go down the road and its gone. The top part and and the part that touches the wheel look like they were just taken out of the box.

I have the Ractive Cross-drilled & Slotted rotor's they are Zinc plated and they were $80 buck's each Cdn. In the Two year's I've had them on they have performed flawlessly no rust, plus using stock caliper's,they have impressed me.

A zinc coated rotor consists of cast iron dipped in zinc. Where the pads meet the rotor they will wear through the zinc and you will get some surface rust. It is unavoidable.

That's actually an anodized aluminum hat on what appears to be a zinc washed rotor.

Mine still look great as well. Happy I got the zinc coated ones since if they weren't they likely wouldn't last nearly as long. They'd probably rust through before my pads ever really had a chance to eat through them.

I've seen cheap rotors practically falling apart from the amount of rust they've built up inside the cooling vanes!

from working at a parts store and being a certified brake lathe operator i can tell you that your standard cast rotors from aftermarke oe replacements ( we carry wagner and standard brake). the wagners are zinc coated (this is waht gives them the lifetime warranty) (for any of those that get parts from an O'Reillys) OE replacements but the zinc coating is undoubtedly thin and less then 1 week of operation and it begins to rust.. but that rotor will last longer than the pads, caliper, maybe car, if they are turned properly and never get the rivets in the pads

i just snapped some pictures of my front brakes...i've had them one for a few thousand miles and no major rust thus far. they are powerslot rotors with hawk hps pads and stock painted calipers. the powerslot rotors are cadmium plated, which powerslot claims to last longer than zinc plating. where the pad contacts the rotors the plating is worn down and so this metal area will rust if exposed to water and left standing for a while. as soon as you drive the car the rust leaves when applying brake pressure.

you can see in the pics that there is just a slim line of rust along the edges of where the pad meets the rotor - this isn't rusted metal, it can be wiped off. it forms because it is right next to where the pad meets the rotor. i got these rotors for about 140 for both. i like them so far.
