i recently bought a set of KYB GR-2's for my '01 Z24. i replaced the rears first on monday and all went fairly well. i didnt get a chance to replace the fronts until wednesday. i had a little bit of trouble overall, but everything ended up right. or so i thought.
today i was driving to my parents house to replace my front wheel bearings and i started to hear a creaking noise somewhere in the front. i really couldnt pinpoint it. while replacing the wheel bearings i checked out the struts, springs and mounts and everything looked good.nothing was loose.
once i was done with the wheel bearing installs, i went for a test run around the neighborhood. it seemed that the creaking had worsened. i still was unable to pinpoint the where the noise came from, but i was certain it was from the front. i tightend the strut mount nuts and bolt thinking they might still be loose but that didnt help at all.
i gave up because i had to go to work and headed home. once i got to my complex, i went over some speed bumps and heard the noise coming from the passenger side only. i went over the bumps with only the drivers side and then only the passenger side and there was no noise from the drivers side.
tomorrow im going to re-check everything on the passenger side, but i wanted to get some input and ideas on what else i should check, and what the noise could be coming from. after that im going to get an alingment done because i need it anyway and see if that helps. thank you all.
Peace Out!!!
How are the bearings on the mounts? Everything sliding smoothly?
the bearings seem fine. i inspected them when i had them off and there is no noise when i turn the wheels left or right. the noise only occurs on an uneven road.
Peace Out!!!
well i found out the problem. the large top strut mount nut was not tight enough. i dont have a torque wrench but i tightened it as much as i could and now theres not a single noise.
Peace Out!!!
good to hear....yes sounded like a loose mount to me, or the loose nut.
yeah, this was really bothering me a lot. i went out last nite and got home at 430 and still got online and searched some more on it. when i woke up today i immediately started thinking about what it could be. i tried to remember every single step i did during the install to figure out what went wrong. finally it came to me, that sound was similar to sliding a bolt on a piece of metal. when i checked out the nut, i tried to loosen it and it was sooooo easy. after tightening them it was so quiet. what a relief it was.
Peace Out!!!
Did you compress the springs in the front?

what happened? did the nut pop off and fly away?
Peace Out!!!

Acutally what happend was that my friend installed my suspension at first. The back went on fine but the front fit oddly. He pretty much forced it into place. So the front looked lower and kind of hit harder. So after about 2 days of driving and hearing a grinding noise when I turned, I decided to take it to the shop. They put it on the lift and you could physically move the spring around on the strut which is a bad thing. Pretty much nothing was supporting the front and it could have come off any second...so I caught it just in time.
They just had to compress the spring and ended up putting the stock mounts on (we had trouble taking the stock ones off the old struts so we bought 95-99 strut mounts I believe).
That was my experience and a lesson learned...
