Ok so I was yard sale shopping with my wife today. And all of a suden the ETS off came up and the check engine light. What should I do to correct this.
Second what exactly is ETS.
Also how do you check the transmission fluid on these things??? Cant find the dipstick.
Also what kind of tranny fluid does it need. Thinking it might be leaking from the tranny pan.
I read that these transmissions never came with dipsticks is this correct.
Is there away to read the codes with a paper clip like the 2nd gens or do I have to go get a reader.
sorry gotta lot of questions LOLOLOL
ETS = Electronic Traction System...... aka "traction control"
Search the forums for the procedure for checking the trans fluid in it. You cant find the dipstick, cuz there isnt one, so that's correct.
The transmission uses regular Dexron III transmission fluid. Look in your owners manual, it'll tell you correct fluids to use.
For the check engine light, you need to go to AutoZone or some auto parts store.. They'll run the scanner for free. Looks like you're from Canada, so hopefully one of the Canadian members on here can jump in and give a suggestion on a place to go (i dont think you have AutoZone) There's no paperclip trick on the OBD-II cars, unfortunately.
So i guess were not able to service are own trannys. Am I able to atleast add a little tranny fluid thru that top red plug marked tranny fluid. I know I have been losing it. Just like to ad some to see what happens.
the ets light comes on when the check engine light is on. i have a 96 and 98 fire with the 4 speeds and they do the same thing. you might have a minor problem. had mine come on cause the gas cap wasnt tight enough.
well you could service your tranny... just gotta have the right tools
mine did it when the IAT sensor went and another time when the TPS sensor went both simple fixes

ok so the check engine light and ets off light has shut off. I also checked out the tranny gasket and its leaking a little bit.
I bought myself the haynes repair manual and servicing the tranny is quite simple once explained. Hmmmm just gotta figure out why that engine light is going on and off.
Might go buy one of those scanners they have at canadian tire. There like 40 bucks.
